Jeffrey D. Roberts, MSEd, B.Sc.
The IBS Self Help and Support Group, formed its charter in 1987 as a patient led and patient governed educational organization for those who suffer from IBS, those who are looking for support for someone who has IBS, medical professionals who want to learn more about IBS and to be responsible patient advocates on local, regional and federal levels. The IBS Self Help and Support Group is an award-winning site which works to educate those who are living with IBS and to increase awareness about this and other functional gastrointestinal disorders. The IBS Self Help and Support Group website was launched in May 1995, as the first website about Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and currently has the largest collection of postings about IBS - in excess of 800,000, making it the largest community created specifically for IBS sufferers. The site has roughly 60,000 registered members. More medical professionals refer their patients to the IBS Self Help and Support Group website than any other IBS website on the internet. Our Medical Advisory Board helps to ensure that evidenced-based medicine and clinical accuracy is shared on our website. The IBS Association, originally founded by the IBS Self Help and Support Group, was folded into the IBS Self Help and Support Group in 2009.
In 2005, The Journal of Consumer Health on the Internet selected the IBS Self Help and Support Group website as an Editor's Select Site. Dorland Healthcare Information rated the IBS Self Help and Support Group website with "BEST Healthcare Website" for 2007. Our website and Facebook communities were Finalists in the Best in Show category for the WEGO Health Activist Awards in 2011.
The IBS Self Help and Support Group website is privately held by a for-profit company (with a not-just-for-profit attitude). Every partnership we develop must bring us closer to aligning patient and industry interests. Our end goal is to improve patient care and quality of life. Funding for IBSGroup.org is obtained primarily from the sale of advertising space. Our website hosts advertisement banners and sponsored links. Advertisement is distinguished by the word "Advertisement". Some funding to develop content is provided in the form of an unrestricted educational grant and content which was written under a grant, is labeled as such. Where content of our website has been used with permission, it is cited as such.
