I have found that peppermint helps alleviate both some of the pain and the gas which is associated with IBS. The woman in my local health food store told me about it. Anyone else heard of this?

I notice some of you are asking for enteric peppermint and can't find it. Our health food store carries it and it is put out by the company Enzymatic Therapy. I haven't used it enough as yet to comment on its effectiveness.

contain their IBS. I have suffered from IBS for 15 years

Title: IBS
Email Address: leaves@accent.net
I have suffered from IBS for over two years. I am 22 years old and often feel like I can't deal with the idea of living with this forever. I have tried to come to terms with a lot of the physical problems this condition brings, but the emotional and mental torture it inflicts are far worse for me. I can suggest that anyone who suffers from the physical aspects read the book "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" by Elaine Gottschall. Can anyone suggest anything to aid the emotional and mental effects of IBS?

the virses that are causeing the ulcer like pains. As the wall lining in your
intestines clean, you may haae diarrea, but the pain WILL go away. Slippery Elm will
help clean up the colon but you must kill off the virus.

It seems that the presence of any gas begets more gas if it

Perhaps because I've started taking acidophilus capsules

I have had menstrual cramps for many years. Nothing seemed to
help. I also have had ibs for 10 years which started out as
lactose intolerence problem. I started taking fish oil capsules
for my menstrual cramps and found in 3 months that they totally
went away. Amazing enough my ibs symtoms did as well. I ran out
about 3 weeks ago and was waiting them in the mail and had 4 bouts
of ibs in 1 week. I'll be curious to see if the ibs symtoms
go away again. I think the two are connected.

Title: IBS mostly Helicobacter
Email Address: guest
Most of the symptoms described by the letters in this column, relate to an infection called Helicobacter Pylori.
Which is detectable and treatable with a triple therapy medication.
Can be detected with a blood test for helicobacter anti bodies, and does not require an invasive or expensive
gastroscopy.
If the triple therapy does not eradicate it the first time, a
further course is usually recommended with a different anti
biotic.

Email Address: prints@mn.uswest.net
I discovered eating alfalfa sprouts really helps my digestion.
There's lots of sprouts to try, but so far the Alfalfa
versions seem to work the best for me. They help me digest
other foods: proteins, oils, and carbs. I still have problems
with stress/anxiety. I have food allergies to so many things
that when I find a "safe" food like alfalfa, I really feel
like I found a treasure. There is also a herbal remedy offered
at: http://www.viable-herbal.com/prod12.htm - size 27K - 11 Feb 97
called Herb-a-Calm for IBS suffers. I haven't tried it yet, but
may give it a shot.
I'd like to recommend that we create an ongoing list of
remedies and get participants to vote for,or rate,
how well they work. This way we can build a statistical
polling of what people feel works the best for various IBS
symptoms.
Good luck to you all.

Title: Severe Nausea
Email Address: mnswede@aol.com
My worst IBS symptom is severe nausea occuring at night, often just before sleep, but sometimes waking up with it. My doctor prescribed Hyoscyamine, otherwise known as Levsin. It is a small pill that you put under your tongue during an episode. It's a gut relaxer. It takes about ten minutes to work for me.
Does anyone know any more about IBS Severe Nausea symptoms/cures that might help me?

Also, if anyone can tell me how I can recieve news/helpful hints etc via e-mail, I would appreciate it if they could let me know.

Email Address: richie7@earthlink.net
My daughter tryed acupunture after two years of western
medicine failures. After her first session she had instant
relief. I have not heard her talk so positive in many months.
She is going to continue her acupunture treatments with the
consent of her regular doctor. I'll report her results as
I get them. We all have hope again.

Title: what's helped me
Email Address: cindyp@jeffnet.orgT
26 years of IBS, since I was 20.What's helped me the most is
CITRUCEL at night, sometimes in the morning. also, digestive
enzymes with every meal, particularly HCL with pepsin.
Chiropractic manipulations have been helpful, also regular
massages. Of course, small meals, no chocolate or coffee,
etc. First time online. Nice to see fellow "belly challenged"
people. Good luck.

Title: heating pad
Email Address: serofpa@aol.com
I have found that using a heating pad after eating and before I go to bed at night helps even if I do not have pain(that does happen occasionallly) This helps clam the muscle spasms. If you can lay down after eating that helps also. If yo work try to do it at least after dinner. The heating pad I uses has a med. setting and that is the one I find helps the most. I know saying calm down doesn't help but I am saying it any way

Title: Peppermint
Email Address: LucyJRT@aol.com
Enteric coated peppermint oil capsules are used in Great Britain to treat IBS, you can get it at Hickey Chemists in New York City. You can also make a strong tea with peppermint tea and boiling water, let it steep for 10 minutes. This is not as good as Peppermint oil.
Hormones are known to make IBS worse.
If you take antibiotics you must reinoculate your bowels with acidophilus (you can use a good plain yogurt from the Health food store.

Title: Nightmare
Email Address: Baboo25@aol.com
I have had IBS for the past 10 years. It seems as if it has gotten considerably worse over the years. I am currently unemployed and I am so nervous about getting attacks at work. I was supposed to start a great job today. I had to leave orientation because I had a major attack of IBS. I went to the bathroom 3 times before I finally asked to go home. Is there anything I can do to help this? I feel like it's hopeless.

Title: lump below my rib cage,
Email Address: jolywo@worldnet.att.net
I was diagnosed with IBS nine years ago when my first child was four months old. I was having panic attacks at the time. I have neither constipation nor diarrhea but instead suffer spasms and a hard lump a couple of inches below my rib cage which is painfull when pushed on. Hugs even hurt. I also experience a sensation that feels like a flutter in my heartbeat. Could the stomach spasms be the culprit? Has anyone experienced these symptoms? They are worse when I am under a lot of stress. Thank you.

Title: ibs/strange symptoms
Email Address: gregg@yourinter.net
I think I have IBS, BUT... I have never had diarrhea, never had constipation, and I don't seem to fit the "classic symptom picture. I DO have: abdominal pain, a "sick" feeling (not quite nausea, but almost), crushing fatigue, and headaches. Most strange is axillary (armpit) tenderness but without enlarged nodes.
Does anyone else have these symptoms?
