I have been diognosed with IBS for 6 months now. I usually have pains 2-3 days a week. I am taking "Bentyl" now 3 times a day for the spasms my stomach has. I have heard a lot of other medications, but will they every work? I am so sick of taking pills, and seeing the Doctor. I am very tired all the time. Just wondering if anyone has the same problems I do and what they have done about it? I keep reading about people who have IBS having symptoms of pain, bloating and diarreha, but what about the opposite: Constipation? I have all the other symptoms too: the constant pains of gas, bloating and general upset stomach, but I can go days without having a BM. My doctor tells me to take fiber for my IBS (I prefer Citrucel to psyllium because it seems less likely to cause gas). When I'm in an irritable state the fiber just seems to make the diarrhea worse, but I think if I got used to a steady amount of fiber it would make things better. I'm wondering if its too crazy to take citrucel *and* immodium at the same time? They seem contradictory but I may need them both. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I just read the posting about anti-inflammatory medications causing the colon to react. I have had IBS for about a year, and I've had rheumatoid arthritis for 5 years. Because of the arthritis, I've been taking anti-inflammatories all the time. Does anyone know if this could be a cause or trigger of the IBS? It seems that I will be constipated for 2 or 3 days and then it will all break loose. I can tell when an attack is coming on because in addition to the severe abdominal pain I develop a terrible taste in my mouth. I started when I was 36 years old with pain in my left side. I had Lower G.I. x-ray and a Sigmoidoscopy. Nothing was found. I was living in Japan at the time, and the doctor had no treatment. Then I was back in the U.S. for a visit and the doctor gave me Combid which helped alot but has since been taken off the market.

For years I was able to manage it with Metamucil but it gave me alot of gas and discomfort. After I had a course of several anti-biotics, I found myself with a severe urgency problem which lasted for about a year and a half. Donnatol Exten Tabs helped a little. But recently I started taking lots of anti-oxidants such as pycnogenol, grape-seed extract and betacarotine which I believe helped.

I am doing much better but still have fear because of the urgency problem in the past. I found IBS BWL TONE capsules from Crystal Star help alot and Aloe Vera juice also helps. Primrose Oil capsules help when you have urgency. I have also used digestive enzymes which I am not sure if they helped. However, I recently bought lactose-free milk, and if I eat anything with milk products, such as cheese, I take Lactaid and that helps alot!

Last week I was diagnosed with IBS. My doctor just using the symptoms I gave him, diagnosed me with it. I had no test given to rule out any thing else although all symptoms seem to follow the signals of IBS. He prescribed Lebrax to control the stomach acid and to soothe my anxiety, which have become frayed since then. He also put me on Xanax. The only problem with this is I don�t want to be on these drugs. I have never really used natural remedies but I will try. I need suggestions!

Although I have never actually been diagnosed as having IBS, the symptoms I continually have would lead me to believe that this is my problem. Moreover, I have seen several GI's and none could diagnose anything 'concrete' regarding my symptoms.
