My name is Yukie I'm 24 and I was newly diagnosed with IBS.
Yesterday I ate a sandwich in class. I go to college. I forgot that I cannot eat wheat and there was a lot in the kind of break I ate. So during my class I began to be sick. I had to rush to the bathroom and event with bowel mouvement I wasn't feeling any better. So yesterday, after being sick because of a slice of bread, I decided to cancel my semester. It was my third semester. I wasn't sick when I took the first two. But now I am wondering if I can manage to finish college without being sick all the time at school. My mom is pleased with my decision because she knew was just going to be sicker. My boyfriend is a bit hesitant about what I chose to do. I feel like am giving up on life.

I know exactly how you feel... I remember when I was in college, I would always see kids drinking coffee, and eating muffins and stuff, and remember thinking how lucky they were that they could do that without even thinking twice...
It's unfortunate that you had to cancel your semester just because of IBS; but I can understand your need to do so. Still, I don't think you need to give up on college completely -- for example, have you ever thought of doing classes online? That way, you can do your work or sit through lectures whenever you stomach allows you too, instead of knowing that you have to be in class at certain times every day, as you would in a regular college.
I'm not sure what program you were taking -- I would imagine some programs would be harder than others to do online (for example, biology would probably be challenging because I'm wondering how you would do the lab work), but I'm sure there's an option out there, if you truly want to pursue it.
Please don't think you're giving up on life because of IBS though; it's a horrible illness that can make you seriously adjust the way you live your life... there's no reason to think that by taking the steps necessary to allow yourself to feel better that you are failing in any way -- even though it may seem that way because of standards that we (or others) have set for ourselves...
thanks a lot for your support. When I called my college they told me that I could take online classes so there's hope
It's just that this illness forces you to live a certain way when that's not really what you wanted it to be in the first place. I liked to eat whenever I wanted but now I have to eat regularly. I was eating sweets and deserts and now my deserts are fruits.

Glad to hear that your college is at least somewhat supportive of your condition, in that they are potentially allowing you to take online classes.
I know what you mean about being forced to live a certain way... but, even with all that you're going through, I suppose you're lucky that you still have certain ambitions (such as wanting to complete your college degree), supportive people in your life (such as your mom) and a boyfriend that is evidently sticking with you through this time in your life.
Just as a final note, it's odd to hear someone telling me that I have faith
Anyway glad to hear things are working out for you school-wise. Here's hoping they continue to improve.
