what do i try now?

I was diagnosed with IBS last year after 2 years of problems with my gut.
I am 21 years old and have constant issues with my stomach , which seems to effect my work, going out ..pretty much everything... my problem is having sudden urgues which happen almost everyday, i have lost weight, lost alot of my confidence and i find myself constantley sluggish..no fun really !!!

i have been trying hypnotherapy since april this year and this seemed to calm me down which then seemed to calm down my stomach issues aswell but lately they seem to have gotten worse, and i made a trip back to the doctors ...
i have tried making food list to see if any type of certain food is affecting me , relaxation , anti spasmodics , and every doctors i have seen seems to have a different opinion on what is causing my ibs!
some say food could be affecting it and the last doctors i saw last said that ibs is never to do with food is always to do with the mind.... so im getting very confused !!

i cant find anything to try to help with this, i feel like ive tried everything but am just getting nowhere.

for the past 3 weeks it has been getting increasingly worse, and i end up not eating for the whole day in worry that if i eat something at work it might trigger my stomach and i end up rushing to the toilet throughout the day, so i wait till im home and have a light tea.
i know that this is not good for me as my weight drops during these time and im always feeling tired and sluggish but i dont really know how else to handle it at the moment...

i am hoping to see a dietician soon and will have food intolerance tests ..so may have some luck there !

if anyone has any suggestions of what they have tried and has helped, i would be grateful as am willing to try anything :D

I am in the same position as you and have given up every kind of food possible that it might be, onions, red meat, dairy... leading to a very boring life style! I tried relaxation techniques, I tried everything! At the minute, I am finding that when I have things to do I still get pretty down, I can sort of control it, I still eat, just very lightly through out the day, I take some spasmonal, which although I am not sure do much are issued by my doctor, and then I always have some diacalm in my bag which stop everything striaghht away!

I always find as well, that if i carry a bottle of water, some polo mints, some tissues etc, I feel alot calmer before a journey. If my stomach starts to feel dodgy before I go out, I drink some water, have a polo and do some breathing exercises. Some times this helps, other times it doesnt and I still feel awful! But there are going to be offf day!!

I completely understand your worrys though, we are both young, and shouldnt be bogged down by things like this, we should be worrying about what dress to wear for a night on the town etc!! All I can say is try these things, do not give up hope, and also maybe keep a diary or find some one to talk to, who would understand, because talking about it sometimes calms you down as well.

Chin up :) xxxxx

I have the exact same problem as you do and its horrible to have to live this way. I am in my 40's and didn't get IBS-D until about 10 years ago. Since then I am always a little "off " in my bathroom habits but lately I am extremely bad, its like I have the stomach flu. I went to the doctor and they did a stool culture test and it turned up nothing. I think I did catch a virus as people at my husbands work were sick and then I got it so bad for 2 days that I really could not even think about trying to go to work. Ever since then, about a month ago, I have been sick with "D" everyday and more than my usual IBS. I also have generalized anxiety disorder and I'm starting to wonder if its my nerves that are doing this to me and making my IBS so extreme. Do you have an anxiety disorder? And if you've never been checked for it, maybe you should, there is a questionare that your doctor will have you fill out.

I use a flavonoid supplement called Provex CV, made in the US but for sale in the UK. I have taken it since July of 98. For the past 10 years I have had a very controllable set of bowels, which have long ago loosed their hold on my food choices, and no longer have problems with my digestion which had been difficult for the 25 years leading to this turnaround. (Disregard doctor who says food plays no role. There is nothing written in stone about this condition.)

I am also young (20) and I feel your pain. IBS effects everything in my life. Often I will just skip lunch at work so that I do not have to worry about spending the rest of the day in the bathroom. My personal life has changed also. If I ever wanted to go out and do anything with friends or my fiance I am very nervous to go. I do not like being too far away from home for too long because I am afraid that I will be too far away from a bathroom and be in trouble. My doctor suggested that I no longer have anything with Sorbitol in it. Things like soda, caffeine, coffee, and sugarfree gum. I have avoided all of these for a while now and I had a glass of soda a few weeks ago, I was as sick as a dog. I dont know if you use any of those things but they have helped me at least a little bit. I am wondering if because we are close in age maybe we have some of the same issues. Do you use any special kind of diet? I have heard that staying away from gluten is a good idea and having a lot of protein is also good for you.

thanks for your comment :)
its sounds like our situations are quite similar.
i feel exactly the same , going out - for a while i didnt go out at all as i was so petrified that the urge would come and id have nowhere to go !! its terrible .
for me the biggest challenge at the moment is work..i work full time and have constant problems whilst im there- rushing to and from the toilet in pain..its very embarassing and all i want to do is go home and curl up.

Even though ive been back to the doctors tens of times they havent yet to suggest cutting anything out of my diet so ive experimented myself.
i too cant drink fizzy drinks, or anything with caffeine in, doesnt have a good effect, i also have found that i cant eat red meats.
somebody had suggested to me that i maybe try keeping gluten out of my diet but im yet to try it, do you know many things that its in ?
do you find that when you are stressed or worry about your stomach problems that this make them worse ? this seems to happen to me quite alot ?

i also keep getting given anti spasmonal drugs but they dont seem to help me i have also tried peppermint capsules which seemed to worsen the D. , it seems like my main problem is the urgency and nothing can seem to help it.
im the same always have water with me , but have never tried the mints does this help ?
i know what you mean about should be worrying what to wear etc rather than worry about this !! :) i used to go out all time but find myself going out once every few months if that, because i worry so much that im going to have a urge when im out !!
