Is there any study about long term use of ondansetron?
I´m taking this medication (1 mg per day) and i´m afraid about some side effects if i use it for a long time.

I took 4mgs of zofran for 2 years and never had any side effects and functioned pretty normally. It did stop working for me in November and I just recently have tried taking it again. The only problem I have now is my insurance is only approving 12 a month at a cost of $35.00. On bad days I would even take 2 plus some immodium.

I did get a prescription for motofen and have been trying that too, but I have not been getting the great results that others have.

Thanks mtk,

How did the ondansetron stopped to work for you?
You are taking it again. Is it working as fine as worked before for you?

Thanks,

André

Andre, it just seemed to stop working just after Thanksgiving. At first I thought I had a flu but as time went on I knew that was not the case. I have had several tests done, colonoscopy, endoscopy, sigmodoscopy and an ultra sound and eveything comes back negative so they think its just my IBS acting up. I started taking the zofran again this week and I'm not getting the same results I got before. Hopefully it will work for you and I wouldn't be concerned about any long term effects. My doctor seemed very comfortable with me taking it for the last 2 years.

Mtk,

Thanks for the answers.
Only one more question:
You wrote that zofran stopped to work after Thanksgiving. Did you eat anything this day that could make zofran stops to work?
Here in Brazil there isn´t Thanksgiving. I don´t know if it is celebrated with foods. Maybe it´s a stupid question.

I hope you be better as soon as possible!

Rgrds,

André

Andre, I ddin't eat anything unusual, but probably more than I normally do. I can't figure out why it stopped working. Maybe I just became immune to the medication. I'm not sure and neither are the doctors. I'm hoping to feel better soon. I have so many social events this summer and it would be nice to be able to go and enjoy them.

Good Luck with your treatment....I hope it works well for you.

mtk,

Im getting my generic ondansetron from alldaychemist.com at $3.50 for 10, might be worth you looking into if your not covered for the amount you need. Ive gone from 4 Imodium a day to 1, so im fairly confidant its the real cipla ondansetron. But keep im mind they are very slow to deliver, takes about 4 days for my payment to be processed then another couple of days to be sent then about 2 weeks in transit.

Nath, thanks for that info. If they start to work again I think I may just order them that way.

Nath, how long are you taking ondansetron?
What is the amount of ondansetron that you take?
Are you better?

André, Ive been taking Ondansetron for about 2 months now, I have tried it in the past but was paying the huge price GSK ask for it. Ive slowly increased my doseage from 1/4 of a 8mg tab per day and am now at 4x 8mg per day which im really not comfortable taking long term. Its no where near as effective as lotronex for me, 4x 8mg is probably similar to 1mg of lotronex and I was taking 4mg of lotronex to get good results. At least a combination of Ondansetron and Immodium seems to work better for me than just Immodium alone which is what Ive been using for about 10 years now.

Thanks for the answer Nath,

I hope you find a best dosage of ondansetron plus imodium or you find another med that help you.
I take Questran, Digedrat (I don´t know the name of this one in the US) and now ondansetron.
I´m going to try hypnoterapy too.
I hope you be better as soon as possible.

Ondansetron is pretty safe in the long term as long as safe doses are used. It's one of the best drugs for nausea supression compared to side effects from H2 Receptor antagonists (Promethazine, cyclizine etc) that I have had experience with.

I take it both for nausea and IBS-D at a dose of 4mg twice a day. I have had no negative side-effects in general.

I just feel lucky that we get free perscriptions in the UK, the cost would be impossible if I had to pay for the actual drug.

Mr. Colt,

Is ondansetron helping you?
What are your simptoms with and without ondansetron?

Thanks,

André
