I understand your concern, but take a deep breath, have a cup of tea, and try and take a calmer view of this. My D didn't start until I was in my 40s, my father died of colon cancer, I was a chain smoker for 30 years. If anyone might have expected cancer it was me. Then my wife's best friend was diagnosed with it, at the age of 45. That just put more pressure on me. At first I didn't want to deal with that so I avoided the doctor. Then, after about 5 years of worrying about it, figured that it was likely to be something other than a tumor. Have the colonoscopy and get the information. Then you can set about trying to find out what caused this and treating that, rather than worrying about something that is likely not the case. I am sorry to hear about your friend's diagnosis. Between that and your own fears, I am sure your stress levels are quite high. That, alone, can make the D worse.Best,Mark

Try to calm yourself. Being upset will only make you feel worse. Because of your friend, you now know the value of a colonoscopy. As you probably have read (if you looked up a few threads here about colonoscopies) the prep is the worst part. Many prefer to be sedated for the procedure and have zero recall of it.What do you need to be talked through?? If you have specific questions about it... post them here and we will do our best to help you.See our GI Related Diagnostic Tests Forum for more info about colonoscopies.

Hi, I've just come back from having my colonoscopy today. It wasn't the most pleasant of things to have done, but it certainly wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be. I was thinking the worst too, but it just showed a healthy colon. You need to have it, so that you can find out the worst, knowledge is power. Fear of the unknown is the worst fear. You'll be fine. :)

Colonoscopy is a relative piece of cake compared to a cramping IBS episode. Worst part is the prep gunk you need to drink the night before. Add some "crystal light" lemon flavor to the mix before you drink it. Also, drink some Gatorade as a chaser to make the stuff easier to stay down. Good luck. Some people actually watch the procedure on television as it's done. I did. Also, see my reply to scarlett21 3/4/2011 (so much pain) note. Controls my IBS 95 per cent of the time. Kylepa.

Why do some people choose not to be sedated?

Some folks just dislike sedation and prefer to be awake & aware. It's personal preference you can discuss with your Dr.

I was the same hun !! first piece of advice - take the sedation !! I was "topped and tailed" endoscopy and colonoscopy at the same time :o I chose the sedation and to be quite frank the worst part was the waking up !! My first words in the recovery room were "i need the loo" i honestly felt as if i was at defcon 5 worst case scenario. To that the nurse leaned over and gently whispered in my ear "dont worry dear you just need a damn good fart !"As they say the worst part is the prep, stay near the toilet, get some baby wipes (the ones will the aloe vera in them are great btw) get a good book and just relax. The thought is way worse then the reality . And with sedation , you go in, you pop off into laa laa land and you'll drift into the land of nod. Oh and need a "damn good fart after"-hugs - youll be fine xSmiles :)
