Excellent research paper G.I'll be checking out enteric coated peppermint oil at my health food store, along with glutamine. This research paper is dated 2002.I wonder if they've done further research on effectiveness of peppermint oil since? So according to this study (page 4), taking enteric coated peppermint oil caused a very, very noticeable decrease in H2 (Hydrogen) and CH4 (Methane) levels. WOWZAH!

Also given that this test was done in 2002, its disappointing no follow up research was performed.I wouldn't say this is indisputable evidence, although well researched, the measures of "lactulose and hydrogen breath test" before and after peppermint oil are taken from only one person, i.e. this is a case study, and as such may not be representative. What is needed is a large cohort randomized control trial.I also couldn't find mention of how long after meals peppermint oil was taken. I was already taking enteric coated peppermint oil, and I'm wondering what the best time to take it is? I tend to take it 20-30mins after every meal

Peppermint oil (enteric coated) is pretty well documented as having an effect on SIBO, my doctor even recommended it to me. Unfortunately it aggravated my symptoms to the point where I couldn't stay on it long enough to notice if there were any beneficial effects.

Same here, made the situation X times worse and can't afford to have that time off work.Peppermint oil (enteric coated) is pretty well documented as having an effect on SIBO, my doctor even recommended it to me. May I ask what symptoms Peppermint Oil aggravated? I just started taking PO upon reading of some's success with it and was, perhaps naively, hoping it was the (or part of the) miracle cure. Now your posts are causing me concern. :-(Same here, made the situation X times worse and can't afford to have that time off work.

I know there is a lot of talk about the enteric coated capsules reaching their destination better, but I have always just used Altoids Peppermint candies. Seriously, I know they're candy, and I know that they have a miniscule amount of sugar per tiny candy, but they've been my salvation for years in dealing with ibs gas, pain and diarrhea. Just throwing this out there so those who have altoids handy, (altoids never irritate my reflux) or peppermint tea (which gives me acid reflux for some reason) may work just as well as the capsules - maybe even less side effects since they're lower strength?
