Meditation and stress relief

Well after going back to the doctors today, we have discussed how stress makes my symptoms worse (which im sure is the cases for most IBS sufferers).To cut a long story short, the doctor asked me if i had an open mind to trying new things and then recommended some reading and suggested i try meditating to reduce my stress. So has anyone tried it or is it just a gimmick?

Not a gimmick certainly works for me very relaxing, also hypnotherapy

oh yes --i've been meditating regularly for over forty years. meditation is great for stress relief, relaxation and general peace of mind. and it lowers blood pressure too. it's been a totally positive experience for me.

Very helpful for IBS - also hypnotherapy - take a look at the link below for more info on the program I used, as this method is so relaxing and really cheap compared to most of the treatments out there - very helpful for me. If you want more info, please let me know. Was the only thing that helped my IBS... :)

Mindfulness based stress reduction (a form of mediation) is pretty well documented as helping with, well, stress relief. :) Thus the name. :)Reducing stress can help with a lot of illnesses, as stress never makes anything better. I mean when was the last time a doc told you that if you just pull a few all-nighters, skip a few meals, and up your mental stress level you'd feel so much better. B)UMass is probably the biggest center for training people to deliver these kinds of programs and have a way to look up programs that may be in your area http://w3.umassmed.e...archmember.aspx They do have some listed in the UK.Duke Integrative Medicine also does them on the phone as a distance learning so that can be an option for some people, and may not be the only distance learning available.

I have been meditating seriously for almost a year now. Some key points about meditation that I feel like beginners should know:-The goal of meditation is not to relax, it's more of a side-effect per say. There are no expectations in meditation.-You will probably find that your mind is very restless. This is normal. No one ever started meditation because they were calm all the time. -Do not worry about controlling your breath. Just let your body breathe how it wants to breathe. Just watch it, be with it, and don't judge it. You always start where you are, and with what you've got. No one starts where they want to be, and with what they don't have.-Do not judge your thoughts, emotions, or bodily pains. Acknowledge them and let them be.My first teacher always asked me:"Are you coming back to the breath when your mind wanders? Are you practicing non-judgement? Then you're doing it right."
