I am 28 years old, diagnosed with IBS-C this past year. I've had lots of tests (endoscopy/biopsies, blood tests, abdominal X-rays...)which were normal, other than the endoscopy showing very mild gastritis. I have constipation (which I am treating successfully for the most part), bloating, gas, belching...

But by far my worst symptom is this horrible burning, gnawing pain above my navel. I have had this pain since mid-October. There are sometimes one or two days that go by without this pain, but most days I feel okay in the morning, then late morning/early afternoon the pain starts. It is a burning pain in the area of my abdomen around my navel...sometimes a little above that, sometimes a little below that.
Wearing pants and anything with an elastic waistband aggravates it also.
(one positive from this situation: i've finally gotten some style :P since i can't wear pants i've been wearing dresses/thigh high stockings/boots.)

I have tried lots of things that don't help (antacids - including gavascon, which I know is different), anti-spasmodics, simethecone, pepto, aloe vera juice, peppermint, fennel, probiotics, and so on.

What helps is lying down on my stomach and heat- heating pads or heat patches. If I use those heat sources too much though I get a rash and a little itching on my stomach. Sleeping also helps - I go to bed in severe pain but always wake up feeling okay.

What helps your pain? Please, please, please let me know.
Is there a miracle drug? :)
herbs?
types of therapy (i.e, hypnotherapy)?
diets?
acupuncture?

Anything at all that helps.

Thank you :)

My "miracle drug" was using the IBS 100 Audioprogram on my gut pain. Works better than narcotics. Please see our CBT/Hypnotherapy Forum for more info. I thought it was an "odd" treatment at first too but trust me... it works. Actually the stats say it works for 70-80% of those who try it. Certainly can't hurt.
Please remember this is a group of folks seeking support on how to live with and manage IBS. THESE ARE ONLY MY OWN THOUGHTS. IF YOU WANT AN EXPERT OPINION, ASK A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL.

I've just been diagnosed with IBS & predominant symptom is burning pain in the places you describe (amongst a few other symptoms that aren't causing me as much distress). After searching online on multiple sites this is the only mention I've found linking burning pain with IBS. I was beginning to think I'd been misdiagnosed! A revaltion to find other people with this symptom. My GI specialist is uninformative concerning treatment, & my doctor's convinced I've a hiatus hernia (wrong location! And Nexium to treat GIRD hasn't alleviated burning & specialist has ruled out hernia in any case). I started on peppermint oil tablets for past 3 days & burning almost gone - hellajulah! But I've been restricting my diet also so I'm not yet totally convinced peppermint oil is only reason why I'm feeling alot better. I need to give it a week or so before I'll be convinced the buring isn't coming back. Strange as it sounds....lying down in the bath with shower on my belly was the only qway I could alleviate the burning pain! But I'm hoping the peppermint oil is what's alleviating the burning. I'm wondering if I should also be thinking about the FODMAP diet. I've only had symptoms for 3 months but I can't see how I would cope if the burning comes back long term. It's been comforting to read of people's experience of IBS on this site. A god send! Friends & family can't really be expected to listen to me complaining for too much longer:) And I don't think they u/stand how preoccupying it is. Those stories I've read about more significant symptoms than mine - & the length of time some have been living with IBS - is truly heroic (& also devastattingly worrying
If my burning comes back!). I was starting to feel sorry for myself.

@Beowulf:
I am glad to hear the peppermint is helping you. Although I tried it before, I am trying some enteric coated peppermint oil softgels again. Maybe I didn't give it enough time.

Wow, I can relate to your feelings! There are days when I get really depressed and hopeless....thinking, what if this never goes away and I just can't take it. But that "feeling sorry for myself" kind of attitude never helps. So I am trying to adopt a more positive outlook and even starting to do some reading and research into the mind-body connection, hypnotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, etc.

If your pain comes back, I encourage you to try applying heat (heating pad, hot water bottle, heat patch- which is actually marketed for back pain...) That always seems to work for me.

Let me know if you discover anything else that helps!

Try anti-inflammatories for some months. It`s clear that 80% of people with IBS have more immune cells in the gut, mild inflammation.
Biopsy are not useful to show this mild inflammation. Maybe stool test are better.
The mastcells and other immunecells irritate the gut nerves with the substances they release.

I have PI-IBS and have mild inflammation with a lot of pain , abdomnial tenderness, cannot wear belts etc. There are hundreds of studies the IBS is a real organic disease , because a lot of people had immune activation. That`s what cause all the pain, diarrhea, constipation.

Mesalazine is a way

http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/19438846

or mastcell blocker, successfull study in Europe.

If this issue get not address we will have IBS in 20 years.
