Hello and welcome to the group! I have explained many times about IBS and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is elevated in ppl w/ IBS. It is what causes the spasms and unfortunately the back pain as well as it causes muscle contraction. I have really bad lower back/tailbone pain and also cramping muscles up near my shoulder blades. The upper back muscles are controlled by the vagus nerve and acetylcholine effects this. Have you had IBS for a long time or is it post infectious IBS (after a bout of stomach flu) this is what I have..it just started after Christmas last year. Luckily this type can eventually go away, but then I suppose I will be worried for the rest of my life when and if I ever get a bout of stomach flu again. I drink chamomile tea this helps you relax and I also ordered the IBS audio program 100 (there's quite a few stories on here under hypnotherapy) Deep relaxation breathing helps too where you breathe from your stomach rather than your chest and of ccourse there is meditaion (there a serveral videos on YouTube that explain ow to meditate. Ironically on the IBS audio program the Dr, Michael Mahoney uses a technique that I have used before in the past (although mine was slightly different) You lay down and tighten your toes and slowly release the muscles, my relaxation tape explains to take in a deep breath as you tighten and release the breath as you relax the muscles. You do this with each set of muscles in your entire body. You really have to clear your mind when you do this as well as meditation. Hope this was of some help to you :)

I've had cramping in the past that I thought was a heart attack, it started at one spot and gradually worked its way around my body until it was back where it started. Waves of cramping! Awful.

Try taking enteric coated peppermint oil capsules they work wonders!! It is recommended you take them on an empty stomach 3X daily, this is so the peppermint reaches the small intestine rather than opeing too soon in the stomach where it can cause bad acid indigestion. It stops the spasms and it relieves the bloating and cramping. It does cause minty burping and some have complained of rectal burning but I have never had this...it does cause minty smelling poop tough which is kinda funny, the first time it happened to me I thought I pooped a tube of toothpaste
