Hello. New to this board but not new to IBS-D. In less then 48 hours I leave for a road trip with my husband and I need to get constipated! My purse is stocked with Lomitil(sp?) and Imodium and I'm so stressed that I keep running to the toilet to throw up. I have 2 -> 9 hour days of driving (on country roads mostly..with very few toilets)and My husband is the driver but he he's very sleepy easily so I can't even take a sleeping pill to know me out. AND suggestions to get me binded up (instead of my usual 10 to 30 times per day..though the Lomotile heps reduce that for sure) would be welcome......BTW I will not be eating anything except some rice and a few other bland things(and drinking only water)till I leave. Plus not much while I'm on the road. No wonder my poor sweet hunsband is not looking forward to this trip with me.. SO people please tell me what has made get constipated for a few days and I'll be very grateful!!n All I need is 2 days with no running to the toilet..

I think the first step is to relax...if youre already getting anxious about the drive then thats definately not going to help keep your tummy calm...if you expect the worse outcome then it will happen. I always used to be terrified of long journeys for the same reasons as you, but honestly the more worried about it you are the worse it will be...keeping calm has such a positive effect on the tummy :) Make sure you check where the service stations are on the drive...supermarkets/gas stations/pubs/restaurents on the way aswel...this might help ease your mind a little. If youre driving mainly on country roads then not to worry at all...if you feel you need to go to the loo then just pull over and go behind a bush...this isnt something to be embaressed about, people do it all the time even if they dont hav ibs...when you gotta go you have to go. Dont let yourself feel trapped...hope you enjoy yourself xx

Thanks for the response :)I'm sure I will end up in a few bushes but eastern Canada is pretty bush free on the Trans Canada sadly and not many toilets I've I've already mapped it all out. But honestly I'm in panic mode...the only thing that will help I think may be taking like 10 Lomotile and the same of Imodium ever few hours ..off to throw up again(out both ends) :(

My husband put a pail,an ordinary mop-pail/or mop-bucket in the trunk of the car, and a couple rolls of toilet tissue in case we have to stop for me to have D on a non-restroom road. But usually mine is so urgent I don't have time to drive around looking for a restroom. I could never make a long trip. Just an hour, or 30 minutes sometimes is too much for me. I can feel every bump in the road and seems like my intestines are jiggling when my husband hits a bump in the road. I think taking Lomotil and doing a jello/broth sort of diet for the 24 hours before you leave would help. My doctor told me to do that before I had my stool test, and the next morning I couldn't have a stool, so I had to wait until the next morning to get a stool sample to the hospital. I didn't have much to eat. I know I had different kinds of jello cups - strawberry and orange and other flavors, vitamin water, and clear soups. Mostly I just ate the jello when I got hungry and drank the water, because I'm don't like clear soups. Hope this works for you, it worked great for me, and I was having severe diarrhea at the time- 15 to 20 times a day.

Honestly plugging yourself up for 2 days sounds really bad. You think nobody else in the car is going to have to go #2 during the ride? I doubt it.Wake up extra early, hours earlier, and think about going and try to go maybe 2-3 times until your stomach feels temporarily calm. That's when you dose up on the anti-D medications. They should kick in momentarily, and that's when you relax because your stomach will be tense from just having to go. If everything goes well, you won't go until the next morning. Works for me almost every time.Worst-case scenario, the urge comes on a bit, mention stopping at the next station/restaurant. Luckily for you, you're a girl, and girls always take longer than guys regardless so don't even worry about it.

Excellent adviceShawna!!! Thx!!! And Kaminari sorry but you obviously don't have the issues I have with my IBS-D...I can sit on the toilet for hours on end with stuff pouring out of me after eating vitually nothing for several days...most days I go a mimimum of 20 times ....it sucks .........And "plugging my self up : is the only route open to me ..I leave in 6 hours...:) and I've had to do it before for short trips and hopefull all will be ok ..my problem is when I have to go ..it's a get me to a toilet (or bucket :))in less then a miniute..and my sweet darling hubby has a very weak tummy so if I didn't make it he's probably smash the car while vomitting..seriously>> SOrry I'm tired an rambling ..good night and wish me luck! Thanks for the responses ...this thread can be closed now!! :)
