I tried doing what the doctors said with over the counter fiber and prunes but it still doesn't help. I heard people take milk of magnesia but I don't know if it is something that you can only take a short time or not. My doc said to use what i could find over the counter, but there are so many that you can't use regularly and I need regular daily treatments.Anyone find something over the counter that works?

Ducosate helps from time to time.

Idealy taking nothing is ideal, but if you have to do it you have to do it.Osmotics like milk of magnesia are typically the least damaging. Although its arguably taking 'anything' causes damage.

Thank you guys.I find that one servings worth of milk of magnesia does help get some things going. I also found that magnesium pills work for some reason.

Magnesium salts tend to all be osmotics whether it is the kind the put in a magnesium supplement or the magnesium salt in milk of magnesia.

magnesium supplements are good. Just don't take too much of them. The max for general consumption is around 400mg a day.If that is providing you with results that is a fairly low dose of drugs.I'm not sure why doctors don't recommend basic magnesium supplements as a first line therapy.

I have had success with Metamucil - one glass every morning. If I miss it, it could be four days before I have another BM. Once when I was really backed up, I took two Senekot-S pills. Within 3 hours, I had a BM. Two hours after that I was nauseous and gagging and the next day I emptied my bowels a few times. It was effective very quickly for me, but since I am only 95 lbs now, two pills was too much for me. One would have been just fine, I think!
