Hi i was wondering if any of you have been abroad? We want a honeymoon but don't want ibs to ruin it??! How can i stay on low fodmap on holiday? Has anyone done it? I will be taking my sickness tablets and imodium but i also wanna try and not eat crappy food. I am lucky my only symptoms are sickness and D so i don't get no pains... So i won't need to worry about that its just going 20times a day or sitting there for ages and it not stopping :(!

It may be worth checking out the cuisine of the country you are going to to find the dishes that are normally gluten free and lactose free. Most cultures have some.My neighbor who had severe celiac since she was a little girl traveled a lot and was able to do it. Generally stuck to plainer foods (like a grilled steak and a baked potato with steamed veggies on the side) as they are typically a lot safer.

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! Come to the U.S.! You won't have trouble with the food as long as you avoid fast food restaurants like Mc Donalds and Burger King. We do have a lot of fast food restaurants in the U.S. but the whole LA area has tons of restaurants in general. We are not a country that is known for our food in that there aren't a lot of foods that are specifically American but I think there is a lot of great food here. We do have lots of ethnic restaurant choices here. Our son lives in Pasadena (in the LA area) so we have been out there a few times. I know a previous poster suggested ordering steak as a safe choice. That would not be a good choice for me since beef is high in fat. If I have steak I eat a couple of bites of someone else's steak. I never eat a whole portion. When I am eating at a restaurant I stick with chicken or turkey (never anything fried). I avoid beans, and fatty foods as well as dairy. I would have to say that breakfast is the hardest meal for me when I am away from home since I try to stay away from whole eggs (preferring egg whites), cheese, and any type of breakfast meat. Bacon, ham, or sausage are staples of the American breakfast. I pass on the breakfast meats because they are very high in fat. If it comes with the breakfast I let it sit on my plate. If I am at a restaurant and I can't find anything safe to eat I order white toast without butter and put jelly on it. Some places will substitute egg whites for whole eggs. If they do then I order scrambled egg whites with tomatoes and spinach. I usually take one Immodium before each meal during travel just for added security. I keep chewable Immodium tablets with me at all times so that if I feel rumbles indicating impending diarrhea I can just take more Immodium. It is not usually too hard to find public restrooms in the U.S. especially in a major metropolitan area like LA. I love the Pasadena area! there is a lot to do there but the traffic is pretty awful all around the LA area. It is the second worst city to drive in the U. S. behind New York City. There is something for everyone to enjoy in the U. S. since it has so much variation. Everything from rural to metropolitan to deserts to mountains, salt water to huge inland lakes to small inland lakes. I could go on and on. If you do decide to come to the U.S. I would be happy to give you more information.

Thank you for all ur information i need to find chewable imodium in the uk. To go to turkey its about 2grand to go to the usa its about 6grand shocking :( i wish we could afford it... We are taking our children also two kids lol. I heard red meat is hard on the stomach i love chicken and turkey anyway they my fav meats. Its the sauces abroad because you don't know what they put in... I will look up a supermarket but i won't be able to read if its gluten free etc, hopefully the guy whos working in the shop speaks english its my only language i am white british so i can't speak anything else lol. I will always carry imodium i don't go out now without it i am starting with one at night time everynight so far its been loads better than it was i go between 1 and 3 which is meant to be normal... If i drink alcohol i can go lots the next day tho but i used to before ibs. I used to get morning rushes but its more 9/11am now strange! :/ i am so confused by all this hope i see my GI soon. I would love to visit the usa one day i hope :) love the accent my friend around the corner from where i live is from california hes married to my friend whos british he wants to go back. So for now its turkey because its alot cheaper just hope ibs doesn't ruin it. People say your more relaxed on holiday lets hope so and thank you we can't wait to marry :)

Congratulations on your wedding! I've been abroad a couple of times since having IBS-D, and lactose intolerance, however when I went to sweden last year, I was able to eat cheese and chocolate without many consequences. Which is strange. Just stick as closely as you can to te foods you know. Maybe if you really want to dive into local cuisine. Do it very near your hotel, with Imodium at hand. I hope you have a fantastic time!

Don't let it hold you back if possible. I'm going to Japan with my boyfriend in a couple of days!!! I'm nervous but I'm bringing lots of imodium and gas-x and my biggest thing is just waking up early and taking a few hours before leaving the hotel in the morning. That will make the biggest difference I think.
