ANYONE THINK THEIR IBS IS CAUSED BY CANDIDA?

It's funny you mention this, because my GI doctor diagnosed me with SIBO last year after a hydrogen breath test. But the antibiotic didn't work. I now have to avoid fermentable foods and sugars, which got me thinking, "maybe this isn't caused by bacteria." Afterall, yeast fungus is on alot of fruits and causes sugars to ferment into alcohol naturally. A product of this process can create carbon dioxide and sulfurous agents (aka very foul flatulence).

Problem is, I don't know how to go about asking a GI doctor for a candida test, or how they would even perform such a test (endoscopy?)

If you do happen to get tested somehow, get back with us and tell us how it goes!

Yeast (candida) can cause a large number of symptoms, including all of those of irritable bowel syndrome - gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

I am not to sure if this means you have either one or the other, or if IBS somehow triggers the symptoms of candida if you know what i mean...

. So i am not entirely sure on my behalf however you should have a look on the webpage at the bottom of this post to see if that answers any of your questions if not it would probably be the classic ask your GP/doctor, as they will probably be the ones to answer your questions.

Hopes this helps.

SIBO is bacterial, just bacteria living in the wrong place. You don't need yeast to make gas. Bacteria ferment carbs into gas as well. FWIW most of the foulest smells in the flatulence come from a class of bacteria that reduce sulfur to hydrogen sulfide and a few related smelly sulfurous gases and the bacteria that do that generally live in the parts of the colon with almost no oxygen and Candida usually is much more common in the parts of the body with more oxygen (mouth and vagina).

Most Medical Doctors will not test for Candida (unless you find one that is Integrative or Holistic) and even then they really don't test for it as for the most part in Science Based Medicine all the evidence shows that Candida is not causing all the myriad of illnesses claimed by Naturopaths and the few MD's that promote Candida as the sources of all illnesses in all people and say that essentially everyone with any symptom has Candida.

Usually in the Science/Evidence based world the only people they find Candida overgrowing in unusual places with the Medical tests for it have severe immunosuppression, like full blown AIDS or chemotherapy. So they can test for it, but they likely won't. Also they usually find mostly they get it in the esophagus not so much the colon (again where there tends to be more oxygen than the colon bacteria can tolerate)

A lot of the Naturopathic tests for Candida are not proven and basically I can tell you if you go to a Naturopath you are probably going to be diagnosed with Candida so if you want to eat the Candida diet and take the Candida herbs you can probably do it without the expense of the visits. However some people do better when a professional guides them and listens to them then when they do it on their own.

If you remove the fermentables that are feeding what you think are the yeast it also starves the bacteria, but you might do the Low FODMAP diet if you prefer it's restrictions.

It was xifaxan. I actually found that VSL #3 (a probiotic) worked better than the antibiotic!
Interesting. What is the dosage of VSL #3 you have been using and for how long ? What are the improvements you saw after using VSL ?

Thanks.

It's just the VSL #3 that comes in capsules and has to be refrigerated. I used to have a terrible fermentation problem, even on the low FODMAP diet. It was so bad, that I developed a malapsorbtion problem. The VSL #3 made it manageable and gave me regularity. After being on it for a few months, I went off of it (because the bacteria should be established by then), and the nasty problems haven't returned yet.
