Hi Ian.It sounds to me like you might have a tooth abcess. If so you'll need antibiotics and once infection subsides tooth pulling. Effective painkillers are co=codamol 30/500 (2 every 4 hours ..no more than 8 in 24hrs and alcohol!!)...you could go to A&E for antibiotics for it if you can't get to a dentist anytime soon. Good luck mate i've had a tooth abcess before and its agony i know.

Oh NO Ian! I hate dental stuff...Been where you are for sure. Almost did my very own "root canal" sans dentist before I finally drug my butt into him.Make an apt or call your dentist now if he has an emergency number and get in there. They have so many advances nowadays they can get you aLOT more comfortable fairly quickly. I know it is ridiculously expensive... but when one is in pain.. ya just gotta take care of it. Also preventative care can stretch a buck out there. I don't know if you have anything like an oral gel or med that you can get in a druggist to apply to the "affected area" but you could try that and some reg pain relievers til you get into the office. Also I found pacing helps.... lolHere's hoping you make it through tonight and can be seen by a dentist no later than tomorrow morning!(((((hugs)))))PS I'll be thinking of you... And I won't forget because I have a cracked crown and another tooth that needs a crown. (They never DO give me any fancy robes to go along with these crowns though. And I noticed NO one bows or courtesies to me either.....
) So I have an appt. on Tuesday.....BQ

hi guysthanks for all your kind words. the pain has now stopped thank god, but i am left with a swollen face on the left that feels like jelly when i walk. because of the gastritis that i suffered for years, i now dont take painkillers, so the last few days have been a nightmare. although i am going to rub some ibuprofen gel in to my cheek to try and get the swelling down.cheersian

Hi mate. One time I was stuck in the high Arctic with an abcess and no dentist due for the next 3 months. The doctor I was seeing at the time was prepared to dig it out, she had watched a dentist do that at some point. While that story has a happy ending, I found that oil of cloves had a small, positive effect on the pain. I smelled like some Christmas decoration but I did get through it.Get to the dentist. Find yourself a good tea tree oil toothpaste and mouthwash. Head this off at the pass.Cheers,Mark

As you should probably know Ian... the swelling isn't a good sign. And I know that you feel relief from the pain.. HOWever... the fact that the pain has gone away doesn't always mean the problem is solved.GET to a Dentist! (in my best "Mom" voice) :(BQ

HI BQI have now taken a dose of ibuprofen Gell (400mg) and the swelling is now under controll and going down slowly. Being a bacteria nut i have taken a swab which i will put through the mill in the morning to find out what is what. Getting to see a dentist in the UK is a nightmare on the NHS, i have been given an appointment for A WEEK ON THURSDAY!!! disgusted i then spoke to a friend who is a GP and he said that it sounds like an abcess that probably burst and to keep on taking painkillers, anti inflammatorys and medicated mouthwash untill i get to the dentsit in almost two weeks. and so it goes on.....cheersIan

Good heavens! A week Thursday?? That's awful Ian. Well yes... I'm glad you can swab and check yourself there at work and I'm hoping you see nothing of a sinister nature.Great that the Ibuprofen worked! And be religious about keeping that rinsed well. I'm so sorry it takes soooo very long for you all to get an appt. I'd gladly give you my appt tomorrow if I could. I'll be thinking of you and keep us posted on how you are faring.BQ
