Presentation at FDA Advisory Committee meeting for Lotronex on April 23, 2002 and subsequent approval on June 7, 2002

On November 28, 2000, Glaxo Wellcome announced that, at the request of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it would voluntarily withdraw Lotronex (alosetron), its treatment for diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) sufferers, from the US market with immediate effect. In December 2000, members of the IBS Self Help Group help to establish the Lotronex Action Group (LAG) which was seeking continued access to the medicine.

On April 23, 2002, the Food and Drug Administration scheduled a joint meeting of an advisory committee on gastrointestinal drugs and a newly formed panel on drug safety to discuss ``risk management'' of Lotronex.  Several members from the Lotronex Action Group and myself, representing the IBS Self Help Group, delivered testimonies to the advisory committee.  Many of us delivered very passionate personal messages.  The advisory committee clearly heard our words and by the end of the day voted overwhelmingly to recommend to the FDA that Lotronex be re-approved for marketing.  On June 7, 2002 the **FDA and GlaxoSmithKline announced that Lotronex would be re-approved for restricted access for diarrhea-predominant women suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  As a team, the Lotronex Action Group and IBS Self Help Group, made unprecedented history in returning a drug to the market that had been previously withdrawn.  We also received an unprecedented amount of media attention.  This for a grassroots organization without any assistance from a large financial or influential supporter.

I am very proud of our achievements to date.  With your member support, I know that we will continue to raise awareness for this illness and the symptoms and quality of life issues that many of us face each and every day.

Attention Young Adult IBSers in the NYC Area

"methical" and "Aeeda", that's Jay and Aeeda, from the IBS BB Young Adult's Issues forum are trying to get together as many young adults with IBS in the NYC area as they can for a weekend get-together. Aeeda, who started this idea, lives close to a beach in Brooklyn and has invited everyone to hang out there, kindly offering her home's bathroom accommodations in addition to the beach's, so you shouldn't feel too hesitant due to IBS symptoms-related worries. The date is open to whatever works best for everyone.

Jay writes, "Are you guys interested? I think it could be a really good experience, especially for people of our age. Not too many of us have many friends with IBS with whom we could relate. I think a lot of us would benefit from meeting and knowing other young people with the same problems and experiences. Plus, we'd have fun too."

For more information please review this posting on the IBS Self Help Group's bulletin board:
