We are recruiting individuals ages 8-21 with a diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Functional Abdominal Pain (FAP) for a 7-week study at Boston Children's Hospital / Harvard Medical School. This study uses a novel and side-effect free treatment.

This treatment works by harnessing the power of the placebo effect to help reduce the pain and symptoms of IBS. The placebo effect can be very powerful and engages your body's ability to heal itself. Unlike many medications currently used for treating IBS, this treatment has no side effects. Placebos have been shown to be effective in adults with IBS and in children and adolescents with other conditions.

Many families are interested in this study because it is very low risk and offers a non-pharmaceutical treatment for IBS. There is no cost to participate and participants will receive free parking and a $75 gift card.

You may be eligible for this study if you or your child:

  • Are between the ages of 8 an 21
  • Have a diagnosis of IBS, FAP, or have similar symptoms and would like to be evaluated by Dr. Samuel Nurko, a pediatric gastroenterologist.
  • Have pain each week
  • Are able to come to Boston Children's Hospital for four short visits over the course of 7 weeks.
