Hi Everyone,

I'm new to these boards, so forgive me if there's a 'beginners' thread that goes over this. (If there is, please direct me to it!)

Here's my story: My IBS-C started almost two years ago. I had lived my whole life up until that point (24 years) with no constipation, ever, barring the normal occasional issue. Then it seemed like, one day, I just stopped going. Not "its hard to go" not "I go once a week" I just STOPPED. GOING.

I went to my GP, they prescribed a number of laxatives that didn't work. I eventually worked my way up to those little bottles of Mag Citrate. Horrible, but the first time, they worked. This was after about a month of not going. Then another month later, I hadn't gone again, the other stuff didn't work. So I tried a bottle or two of the Mag Citrate (I had avoided it because it was so unpleasant).

This time, I was in bed in severe pain, puking and not being able to eat or drink for 3 days. Went to a specialist, he said I was "just constipated" and he "wasn't worried about me." Eventually, the Mag Citrate worked, but only after 5 days or so.

This was August, and I kept taking various laxatives that didn't REALLY work for the next few months. Pellets here and there. I just wanted to ignore it, which was so dumb. I don't know how I even managed that long. But when I went home for Christmas, I took the Mag Citrate again, I wanted to feel good for the holidays, not swollen and in pain all the time. I thought it might work after a few days again.

This time, I was in bed for over a week without eating and barely drinking. Puking and not sleeping. I slept on the bathroom floor a few times.  Let me just say I am not a person to go to a doctor or say something is severe if it isn't. This was the MOST painful thing I have ever felt. My poor mother thought I was going to die. (I told her she was being dramatic, but it kind of felt that way, too.) I was bloated so much I looked like a balloon.

Eventually, after a colon cleanse that did nothing and other doctors that did nothing, I went to the ER. They admitted me to the hospital to have a CT scan.

You guys. I don't know if anyone else on here has gone 7 months barely going, but this CT scan was unlike anything I've ever seen. This is so TMI, but I guess if anywhere, I'm on the boards that would understand: I was completely filled with poop. It horrified me (still does when I think about it). It was up to my ribs and just EVERYWHERE. I definitely had a megacolon (still might? I don't know if those go away).

From Christmas Eve til after NYE I was in and out of the hospital. Fun! First hospital did nothing. They prodded at me and discharged me and then charged me $1200. The next hospital actually seemed to give a crap. They gave me colonoscopy prep. You know those giant bottles? I had almost two of them before I went. I dont know how I fit it in me. Desperation, I guess. It worked. That is... the best feeling I've ever felt, I think. I NEVER want to get to that point again.

They prescribed me to take MiraLax as needed, and discharged me.

Now it's almost a year later, and the Miralax still works, but I'm still trying to figure out how best to take it. Sometimes it seems like I need a lot and sometimes it seems like I need very little. But I never need NONE. I do not go without it.

Occasionally I will miscalculate and become stopped up again, and go through that agonizing pain for a few days. This most recent time was this week. I had to call out of work. I HATE doing that.

I guess my question is... does anyone have any advice or magic thing I have not heard about yet? Anyone who has as severe C as I do have any luck with anything? I'm scared to try anything WITHOUT the miralax, as you could imagine. Pain is pretty strong conditioning.

I don't know. I know there's no magic pill. I know it could be much worse. But DAMN, I feel like I'm n a nightmare.  A literal nightmare. How could this come out of nowhere?

Sorry for the rant. Thanks to anyone who read all this.

(TL;DR-- I suddenly couldn't poop two years ago and still cant. Help?)

JD -

Hi. Once you have chronic constipation you pretty much have to keep taking whatever works every day, or it just comes back.

What else? I don't use regular milk in my cereal anymore, I use soy milk (it tastes great) and I also avoid whole wheat products too. Also, less fiber is better than more fiber. Fiber really slows me down and make me extra constipated.

I take almost a full cap full of generic Miralax every day, plus this, as it does the trick (click on below link to read):

Thank you so much for the reply, Flossy.
I was afraid of that. I'll just keep taking a few caps of ML every few days then. I just pray it doesnt lose effectiveness!
Anyone else think a lot about how screwed we would be if we lived before modern medicine?? Lol.
I'm glad I found this forum. It does help to know I'm far from alone in the severity of the problem.
