So, from 2012 to the start of 2015 I suffered severely with IBS and symptoms were preventing me from leading a normal life. After numerous changes to my diet, trying medication such as buscopan and even antidepressants to reduce stress my symptoms werent improving at all and I accepted that my IBS could not be controlled. Then, at the start of last year I noticed that I was no longer feeling gassy, bloated or making constant trips to the bathroom. Since then, I have had no symptoms whatsoever of IBS and Ive been so happy about it. Im currently on a working holiday in the Canary Islands, Spain. Ive been here for 6 weeks but for some reason my symptoms have randomly returned worse than what they were before. My stomach has doubled in size and I genuinely look 9 months pregnant, its not going down in size and I seem to be living on the toilet (TMI I know..) Im just wondering though if anyone can think of a reason as to why my symptoms have returned and if this has happened to anyone else before?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as Im in agony and this is ruining my holiday.

I'm sorry. I'm screwed, too. You have any idea at all what might have made your symptoms improve and why it went wrong again? tc

It's happened to me, too! My symptoms went away for a few months and then returned, even worse than from before.  I call these "flare-ups" but some people call them lapses/relapses.  It's when IBS symptoms disappear for a period of time, but then they return at a later time.  I'm sure it's just a temporary flare-up since your symptoms have disappeared before.

It could also be the different foods that you're eating that your system may not be used to.

Constipation triggers:

  • Breads and cereals made with refined (not whole) grains
  • Processed foods such as chips and cookies
  • Coffee, carbonated drinks, and alcohol
  • High-protein diets
  • Dairy products, especially cheese

Diarrhea triggers:

  • Too much fiber, especially the insoluble kind you get in the skin offruits and vegetables
  • Food and drinks with chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, fructose, or sorbitol
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Large meals
  • Fried and fatty foods
  • Dairy products, especially in people who can’t digest the milk sugar lactose, called lactose intolerance
  • Foods with wheat for people who are allergic to or have a bad reaction to gluten.
