Hello everyone. I am new here. there seems to be a lot of knowledge and helpful people on this forum. i will be highly thankful if somebody could help me with the worsening condition of my father. He having problem of

incomplete emptying of bowels with lot of mucous for last 2 years.

Age-46

Problem- it has been more than 25 years since he is suffering from incomplete emptying of bowels filled with  lot of mucous. Tried every doctor, every medicine but they help only for few days, now nothing is helping him. the problem has somehow turned into frequent episodes of prostate enlargement which leads to extreme sudden chills, fever, extreme headache,  vomiting and ultimately hospitalization.

but there is something strange. after 10-15 days of continuous incomplete emptying of bowel he will start having headeches, chills,  forehead getting very chilled suddenly, vomiting, then he will be admitted to hospital where they will treat him for prostate enlargement and urinary tract infection(but he does not  have any problem in passing urine, not even little). he will be given anttibiotics monocef through I.V  for 2 weeks and his bowel movement will become totally like a nornal person during that treatment and then he will pe prescribed ceftum(Cefuroxime)500 mg for 2 weeks to be taken at home for 2 weeks and his bowel movement will again be regular for 2-4 weeks before returning back to incomplete bowel emptying filled with lot of mucous as soon as those medicines are stopped. this cycle of getting hospitalized and being treated with antibiotics for prostate enlargement and UTI and his bowel movement becoming regular again on being treated with antibiotics  has repeated 4 times, exactly in the same manner.

He do not have any other ailment or disease except this. perfectly healthy in every other aspect.

discussed this with many GI specialist but no one has been able to provide solution for incomplete emptying of bowel because that's what gives rise to prostate enlargement and fever chills and headaches in the first place.  is there any solution for this problem of his? can those antibiotics or any other medicine like them be taken continuously for a long time?

I will be highly thankful if anyone  can share their experience or knowledge about this.

HI: You have several issues going on here at once, but stemmed from one issue.  I take it you have IBS..? Because you have all the signs to what you describe. After you go over ten days holding back your a bowl movement you can expect some level of infection that will set in to your body. I'm not a Doctor, I can only tell you from my experiences dealing with IBS since 2006. I have no idea if your on any diet to restriction to food intake. All I can tell you for a starter if it was me.. Get off all Carbs. They will slow down the colon movement and cause constipation faster than any other food. Plus carbs and IBS go together like OIL and Water being mixed, they don't. The fever is obviously from some low level infection in the system. Mucus comes automatically when the colon is under stress and is not moving to protect it. Its your friend to keep you alive. Prostate enlargement: Anytime your colon on a Male is under stress expect to have some issues with your Prostate Gland and being able to empty fully. And if it doesn't it will get infected. Its more of a side affect of an existing on-going problem in your body. The Urinary Tract runs very close to the rectum even though they are not physically connected, they can control each others daily function. So the Doctors are treating for as usual the side affects and Symptoms. Just what all MD are trained to do and no more. And Don't be surprised they tell you very little. With all the antibiotics you have been taking, I would highly recommend you take a good Probiotic to restore your gut Bacteria that the drugs wipe out. The drugs you are taking restores you bowl movement temp. and just as soon as they ware off your back to ground zero again. It sounds to me you need to read and study the affects IBS has on your system, start a good Diet of good quality fresh Veg. and fish for protein. I also stay away from any food that takes hours to digest, like heavy greasy meats, Zero can meats or processed foods. And for at least awhile stay away from all Dairy products. That is not a problem for me I can not drink milk only drink quality water.  Hope this will answer some of your concerns. We all have to live and learn in this life and what we have been dealt with.  Wishing you the best to come.

Thanks very much for such a detailed answer. i have taken your suggestion of staying away from carbs and will make my father follow them. i will keep him him on a carb restricted/banned  and protein rich diet. all of these issues seemed connected but doctors are not able to take a clue from that for further treatment of this bowel issue and moreover they never even acknowledged whenever we asked them to confirm weather this bowel issue and prostate enlargement issue is connected. after a while into this profession  they all become impassive towards their patient and keep on prescribing temporary relief drugs. anyways thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. i will make my father follow carbsless and protein rich diet.

HI: Just to add to your Fathers intake as I am doing right now in my diet. Prepare for him some Fruit smoothies to drink, they will help a lot to keep the BM moving and avoid constipation. The Yellow sweet Mango's are best, mixed with fresh peaches, some cooked prunes, Organic Bananas, black grapes and if you can find some Kiwi fruit. Thrown them all cut up in a blender to they turn to liquid. You may have to add some quality water into the mix to make the mixture drinkable and less thick. It works for me, stay away from these chemical laxatives they are only for Doctors to take to sweeten up their attitudes. I also take daily Saw Palmetto for my prostate issues for the past 20 years. Always buy Organic Fruit when you can and Veg. Stay away from anything GMO, it can only be digested by Aliens where it came from.

When I get constipation I generally go on a liquid diet to it clears up. I eat all fresh Veg. throw them into my Pressure cooker all at once and cook them off with a small amount of water. Than throw them into a blender and turn them into liquid. Pour them into a bowl and that is my meal, including the liquid from the cooker. This helps out in digesting the food. Tell him to eat the mixture slowly and chew any lumps well. If he is up in age like myself, I'm 74 in a few days. Take a B-12  and Vitamin D, supplement. B-12 is not expensive if you shop around for 100 tabs. $2.50 to $4. Try to get outside in the sun as much as possible to boost your Vit D, level and the better air quality. Inside air is poor at best. And get as much exercise as possible each day, if it isn't anymore than a 30 min. walk around the house, yard or in the park. NOT in the Malls. the air quality there is terrible. Spices, you can add a little basil, a dash of Mrs Dash table blend seasoning. And stay away from any Milk products for at least awhile, Coffee & Tea, they just irritate the colon. No Egg's, each one has 235 mg of Cholesterol, not food for the elderly. No sugar of any kind.

And try not to get stress out over anything... It will never change a thing. Have a great day and I wish him the best and many more good years ahead.

Thanks a ton for all that useful info which no doctor gives. i will ask him to follow this diet and supplements, hope it works for him. currently he is using bel fruit, its some kind of hard shell fruit. he dissolves the fibrous fruits in water with his hands. its working for him somehow. you should try that also. Thanks a ton again for the information about the diet and supplements.

Okay, Thanks... The fruits and smoothies is all I can take, once I get unclogged I have to cut way back on my fruit intake or it will continue to give me Diarrhea. Than go onto foods that will control your BM, I also make a Home made Muffin from white rice flour and oatmeal (quick cooking for this) three cups total, with a one or 2 cups of water, no milk. I add a little cinnamon, four whites from eggs, two tea of baking powder and cook at 450 degrees for about 15 Min. give or take a little more depending on your oven. Test the first batch with a tooth pick. Beat the mixture up well and pour it into one of the large 6 cup muffin pans. I for a long time ate one of these with every meal and was able to gain most of my weight back after losing 40 pounds in 2015. You can also use brown rice flour, or mix it with it with other flours that are gluten free. Almond and coconut can be used in different degree, but they are much heavier and can be hard to digest for some during the recovery phase. Coconut flour especially, and you have to use less of it as it swell up once the liquid is pour into the mixture. I'm pretty much into a plant base diet, except for a little chicken at times, again it depends on the individual condition if he has had a flair up recently. Cook at 400 for 22 minutes or 450 at 18 minutes. but again check before you pull them out with a pick. You can also make home made jam for him by cooking fruit in a pot to it thicken up, like strawberry's, they are now in season in Florida. The jam is very good with the muffins as I don't use any butters or dairy products. Most elderly are milk intolerant. I drank soy for awhile, and Almond milk, but in time could not drink either one. I would not go back to soy, but maybe some day with almond if my condition changes. I am also battling Candida and leaky Gut after the 11 Colonoscopy's. Diet is very important in recovering from any of these bowl illnesses. Hope this helps his situation and his recovery.
