The manufacturers of Amitiza (lubiprostone) recently announced some positive results of ongoing studies into the safety and effectiveness of the medication as a treatment for constipation predominant IBS (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC).

According to the Sucampo press release, data from several studies were pooled, resulting in the following findings about Amitiza:

  • The medication was effective regardless of the age, gender or race of study participants
  • Symptom relief was experienced up to year (the length of the clinical trials)
  • The medication helped those whose symptoms did not respond to any prior treatment.

It is always heartening to hear about safe, effective treatments for IBS. Let's hope the trend continues!
