It may be that a new sub-type of IBS is being identified, that of 'atopic bowel'. The term 'atopic' has to do with an allergic reaction in the body, like those typically experienced as an allergy attack. My first introduction to this possibility came in the form of a study that found a higher prevalence of IBS in patients who suffer from allergies (Allergies and IBS). A new study sought to gain further information regarding the association between "atopic disease" and GI symptoms.
