Hi, I'm new to this site, but I'm glad I found it. I have had IBS (D) for apr.2 years, I didn't do anything about it for the longest time, I guess I was afraid to, with having such a cancer history in my family.I sucked up the courage to see my doctor, had a colonoscopy and then had a sm.intestine follow through,THANKFULLY both were normal. I just had a lactose intolerance test done, and I'm not lactose intolerant either. I guess my IBS(D)is stress and food related. I find the medication (in Canada) Modulon Trimebutine Maleate 200mg 3x/day helps, but I really noticed an improvement when I also started taking Acidophilus with Bifidus capules 3x/day it's an all natural digestive aid, it is putting "good bacteria" into my stomach, and giving me the chance to get some nutrients out of my food, causing less "bad bacteria" to form which cause's bouts of (D). It is available in different strengths, I started out with 10 billion active cells per capsule and now I have found I can manage on 6 billion active cells. It's definetly helping me, I have had less bouts (D) or spasms and I am slowly expanding my "SAFE" food possibilities, which is great...more choices. Thanks for letting me ramble on...but I'm new to this. Have a good day !p.s. I know now I never should have waited that long to have it looked at by a doctor.

Lori Ann,I just started taking acidophilus too and I have noticed a slight difference. Was your improvement gradual or instantaneous? I'm still not sure if it's working b/c I feel like I"m taking control, or if it's really doing something. Either way, I feel better. Welcome to the group. I'm new too and it's a wonderful site

Hi Mikala 1, thanks for responding, this is a very good site and I find it comforting to be able to communicate with other people in my position. I started taking the acidophilus just after I got my results from my colonoscopy (Feb 2001), so for the 4 months I have been on it, it has really helped alot. I have been episode free for roughly 8weeks, with no (D)..(knock on wood).I have also been gradually increasing what I refer to as my " SAFE FOODS"-eating more things to 'test the water'. What strength are you taking and how long have you been on it? For me the first thing I noticed was the attacks of bad gas dimished and then the spasm feeling started to not occur as often. Now I find that it has helped balance my system out, thus keeping me on track Keep in touch and let me know how the acidophius is working for you.Take care...Lori-Ann

Lori-Ann and Mikala, If you go to the archives and look up "culturelle" you will find some research about only certain types of Lactos can withstand stomach acids. One of those is Lactobaccilus GG and another is Lactobaccilus bifidus. Lactobaccilus acidophilus alone seldom makes it to the colon. Culturelle is a brand name for a Lactobaccilus GG product.

Yes, it does but make sure you buy a powder that comes in a BROWN GLASS JAR that the store keeps in a REFRIGERATOR that you must keep in the fridge too. This is ACTIVE cultures, when they get hot they die. I take one that has MORE cultures than LACTOBACC. It has 2-3 and works even better. If you are lactose intollerent, makes sure you get a MILK-FREE one. My ACUPUNCTURISTS/HOLISTIC doctor advised me that the capsules keep at room temperature are 'a waste of money' as heat kills this fragile bacteria. I take mine in yogurt, but withe water is fine. IT REALLY CUTS DOWN ON THE D & GAS! Capitol Drugs in L.A. sells these cultures in brown glass refrigerated bottles.
