Is there anyone out there that has taken acidophilus supplements? I called an advice nurse the other night and told her about my gas problems and what I call "stinky stomach" and she suggested that I eat 8 oz of yogurt a day and take two acidophilus pills a day. She said my stomach may be depleted of good bacteria...anyone know anything about this? I've been trying so many things...chlorophyl from GNC weren't cutting it. My biggest concern with IBS is the gas...it's my most troublesome symptom. Any advice/info would be great!

Hi Bubbles,Culturelle helps control intestional gas for me. I have read that some people initially get gas from acidophilus but this goes away in time as the "bad" bacteria are killed.I use Culturelle since it isn't affected by stomach acid. It is my understanding that for Acidophilus to be effective it must get passed stomach acid. I'm told that good Acidophilus should be bought in a health food store and is kept in the refrigerator.Culturelle is the exception. It does not need refrigeration and can be taken with or without meals. It has been hard for me to find so I order it on line. For more information on Culturelle click on: http://www.culturelle.com/index.html Hope this site is of some help.vikee

I have taken probiotics for 12 yrs now. Probiotics are even better and more potent than just Acidophilus because there are more strains of bacteria that you need. I noticed an improvement the minute I started. I use to only take one a day but recently was having more flare ups due to stress and increased it to 2 per day. I think I'll be taking these for the rest of my IBS life.

Hi Bubbles,Please note this correction. Probiotics promote friendly bacteria in the large intestines. Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria. The natural flora in the intestines are restored with Probiotics. I use Culturelle which has billions of probiotic (health-promoting) good bacteria, that populate your intestinal tract. These friendly bacteria form a protective barrier to keep bad bacteria out, and maintaining a healthy intestinal tract.People on this board use different kinds of Probiotics (including Culturelle). They can be gotten in the pharmacy section of stores or in health food stores. Culturelle is suppose to be at most CVS stores. I have trouble getting it there so order on line at the site I posted before.I hope others share with you the brands they use and where to get them. vikee
