HiI am in Lancashire In England, and Have recently been told I have IBS. I started with stomach pains in September 2009, and they were so bad I was admitted to Hospital, where I have had a CT Scan, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Small Bowel meal, X rays etc, and they have said I have IBS.My Consultant put me on Nortriptyline 20 mg to start with, then to 30mg. I came off these after 2 weeks,As I found then no to be effected.I have been on them before, due to TM Joint problems, was on 60mg,and then ended up having a steriod injection after 12 months of being on the tablets. It was when i was weening off them at 20mg, my stomach started to hurt. My consultant has put me on Colermin, Mebeverine - which gave me more wind, and BuscopanI have Anxiety due to my IBS, and when I get pain, I get anxious. Hope that makes sence! My Doctor said I need to see a professional, and he has put me on Buspar for my anxiety, and wants to pit me on Venlafaxine. he said I'm not depressed, but they should help.I'm taking Buspar, but Dont want to take the Venlafaxine, due the side effects I have read about.I know my Stomach consultant wants me on Nortriptline again. what should I do? He said its been trial to help with nerve pain in the gut. I see him on Tuesday.Any help welcome, as I have lost over 2 stone, since september and I'm so down about it all. Fiona

Gosh I wish I could be of more help..... I have not taken any of the meds you mentioned. I have tried Bentyl for the cramping/abdominal pain, but that is all. Maybe someone else on here will be of more help.~Renee

Fiona I too am in the north west uk and have been given the various anti spasmodics you mentioned, mebeverine, buscopan etc and have found them to be about as useful as a chocolate fire guard! In other words no use at all.Our US sufferers seem to have access to a whole different range of drugs to what we do and I am currently trying to persuade my doctor to prescribe me one or two of the US medications available in the UK as I've had absolutely no luck with any of the regular anti spasmodics here.My advice is to do a bit of research,as well as looking at the lists on this website and tell your doctor that nothing you have been prescribed has been of any use and you need to try different drugs instead.Good luck

Fiona my doctor has just prescribed spasmonal aka alverine citrate about a week ago and they are hopeless. How these things actually get marketed is beyond me as they are all hopeless, anti spasmodics I mean.Don't know anything about nortryptine at all.If it's an anti depressant then I tried amitryptilene and it wasn't helpful.

Be careful... Please remember we are ALL different. For example some folks DO find some spasm/cramping/pain relief with antispasmodics. And hopefully Fiona is one of them. I AM sorry though jmc09, that you were not helped by either anti-spasmodics or anti-depressants. Hopefully you find something soon that helps you.

BQ I understand what you mean but based on both my own experience and fellow UK IBS sufferers the views seem to be that most UK prescribed antispasmodics are pretty ineffective. There are many different brands but all seem to be very mild treatments. But of course they probably do work for some people but I would suggest maybe only milder or shorter term attacks.
