Hi all, I would like a little advice on something I am already worried about now which is making my IBS symptoms really bad. I am going to meet a lady from Turkey we have been in contact now for over seven months and both decided it is time to meet each other in the flesh, we get on very well she knows about my IBS and all is fine. The thing is I am already panicking about the food will my IBS play up and spoil the holiday and the meeting of a girl I am very fond of? I have frequent diahorea in the mornings which is normal for me but have been told by my friends that I have to be careful what to eat and also by all measures not drink the water, my lady friend is very good and understanding about my IBS but I am really panicking about the trip, I booked it up only yesterday and have become more agiated by the day. I keep telling myself this should be something to look forward to, a possible new relationship and a trip for a holiday but I just cannot see my way past my IBS being a problem. I want to go and meet her but in another way I want to stay home where if I am ill then I am at least in my country. Do you think I am silly to get so worried?

Traveling with IBS is a problem. Use bottled water of course, even when brushing your teeth. Carry all the meds that you will need in a carryon. You are flying, I assume? Don't pack them in your luggage. Make sure that all the meds are in their original containers.Eating: avoid raw fruits and veggies. Plain rice should be safe. Avoid coffee and carbonated drinks and ask for no ice in cold drinks. Stick with bland foods. If you eat meat, chicken will probably be a good choice. TRY not to worry about an IBS attack, (better said than done, I realize). Take things easy and pace yourself. But try to make the trip. It will be worth it.

Hi nerfmom, Thanks for the advice yes it seems I was thinking the same way, a friend is coming with me and he has what I call a cast iron stomach he still got sick travelling to Turkey when he forgot about the salad he had out in a smaller restaurant, he told me he was sure it was the water the salad was washed in that caused the problems. I like chicken but am worried about the bird flu

This may sound odd, and is certainly no simple task, however, I find that when important events are occurring in my life, I focus in on the event and trying to relax, to the exclusion of the symptoms, and two things result; the symptoms seem to temporarily improve while I perform the task and the performance of the task is more successful. Try to zone in on having a wonderful relaxing time with this woman and just live in the moment.

Gee, I forgot about the bird flu. Just be sure to stay away from raw fruit and veggies. Just a change in water can set us IBS people off, even if the water is bacteria free.

Dont panic. Youll have a great time. I envy you. First dates are always nervwracking, whether youre 16 or 116 (and clearly youre neither of these- but somewhere in between!) & the key is - dont try too hard, be yourself.Bear in mind that Turkey is a civilised 21st century country. Having said that, water quality in the sticks & in some hotels can be a little iffy (as it can also be in France, Britain, the US or anywhere)- so stick to cooked food, to be ultra safe - but bear in mind that, although this will help to reduce your chances of food poisoning, it has nowt to do with IBS. Your past experiences are the best guide to minimising that. And, just so you know, you can't get bird flu from eating cooked chickens or eggs (just be careful how cheeky you get with the live ones though ...)

Hi Sun, Yes I realise you cannot catch bird flu from eating cooked chickens but I am a worrier. I always buy bottled water when infact I go anywhere in Europe, the good thing is the lady I am meeting is very understanding and knows about my IBS, we have hit it off big time and are in constant contact, I am looking forward to meeting her and asked her to look after me, I do not want a bad stomach all the holiday although I come to expect it now with my IBS. We will see thanks to this board everyone is very helpful and understanding

I hope everything works out well for you.I had a similar experience some time back.I corresponded with a penpal from Denmark when at school, and we lost contact several years ago. Through a women's magazine she managed to track me down, as she was coming to my city and wanted to meet up with me. I thought of every trick in the book to avoid meeting her, but, at the end of the day, I knew I could not get out of it. To make a long story short, we ended up having 3 pleasant hours together. I later emailed her and told her that I had IBS. She had asked me during our conversation why I hadn't got married and I brushed it off, but I thought afterwards I would tell her that IBS was a millstone round my neck! You will understand this....she didn't know what IBS was and had to look it up.By the way, I have a strong desire to visit Prague too. Any recommendations for internet sites, cheap accommodation, etc?Take care.
