I was not aware of how often I swallow air-saliva, until I tried to limit how often I do it.Only problem is now my mouth keeps filling up with saliva and i have to keep spitting it out.I read that the average person can swallow up to700ml, so surely most of this is unconsciencely swallowed.Anyway, happy new year to allhope 2007 brings medical advances and new insights into this frustrating condition.

Dieselengine ~ Sorry -- I didn't mean to laught at your discomfort! Hope I didn't offend you. Seriously, I personally think it has to do with paying a lot of attention to one thing which makes it feels even more noticeable and therefore making oneself doing it more... I remember when i was about 12 or 13 I did what you did a couple times (don't remember why anymore) and at that time I didn't have IBS... I'm not saying swallowing air is not ibs related or anything cos i really don't know. but maybe if you try and engage your mind with something you really like to do, like, a favorite hobby and try not to focus solely on how not to swallow, it may feel better.Happy New Year to you, too!

LOL no Problem CheriThe reason I tried to focus on my air-saliva swallowing is that it could be one of the causes of my excess wind problems. Your right. once you start to focus on something that is usualy subconscience it really becomes noticable. Now the hard part, to stop being conscience of it.

Hi again Dieselengine ~bedtime does seem to be a time when one is most aware of stuff like this! the same thing happened to me before back then at around the same time, and your time span does not seem to be that different (from what I reckon you'd normally do without being super aware of it).I do understand your reason to try and limit swallowing, though -- it's just that i kinda doubt that normal amount of swallowing is the cause of having excessive gas... From my limited experience, i feel that unless one is chewing gum or speaking while walking outside when there is too much wind (esp. cold winter wind), one won't swallow more air than usual... i remember Kathleen M posted some time ago that IBS-ers do not usually *in reality* have more gas than those without the illness -- it's just that it feels differently for us... Or something like that... So, i kinda think that maybe you might want to liten to some light music or something before you fall asleep and hopefully that'll take your mind off it.

My goodness, you are a healthy person.
The normal dry swallowing rate in an adult is one swallow every two minutes. When you lie down, relax, the swallowing rate decreases by half, which happens to be one swallow every four minutes. So you do clearly not have an excess swallowing rate.
