Hello, I am new to this board. I find ot pretty embarrassing to discuss potty problems but I guess this is the place. I have been having ibs syptoms for the last two years. I have suffered horrible bouts of D on and off. I tend to stablize eventally and go a week or two and the then D becomes a horrible problem again. After a bout of D I do not have a bm for one to three days. I figured this wasn't a problem since my system was totally cleaned out anyhow. Even after 3 days a bm is never hard or uncomfortable. I have never taken a laxative or felt like I needed one. The only time I have ever felt C was on vacation. For some reason my digestive tract goes on vacation whenever I do. Sometimes there is no activity for a week. Of course when I get home D sets in. I should say it tries. There is no pain on earth like cramping and not having a bm for a week. Trying to pass a weeks worth in one motion is the most incredible pain I have ever experienced in my life. I cannot imagine giving birth would be more painful. Anyhow other than the vacation problem I consider myself a D only. Even if I commonly skip a bm every other day. Am I wrong?

I alternate between the two. It sounds like you do also. But like me, those days of C after a flare up of D can actually seem like the good times. But I've come to realize that for me, the key is really to break the cycle. So I pay close attention if I haven't gone in a couple of days. If it seemed normal leading up to that, no big deal. But it they had been small amounts, then I think hmmm. Because I know that frequently, the only cure for the C has been a bad case of DBTW, this has gotten better since I learned some things here. I take a calcium and magnesium supplement to try to keep things evened out (one constipates, the other does the opposite). I take fiber although not every day unless I am in C mode. More like every other day normally. And I've been doing the hypno tapes - I know stress is a big trigger for me. nancy IBS C/D

I have the exact same thing. I don't think this is constipation. People need to remember, not everyone goes to the bathroom once a day. Before my IBS symptoms, I often went every other day and sometimes once a day. I only have these bouts of not going a day or two at the most, after a bad day of D. I do not take anything, I just wait. As you said, I never have a problem going once I do go again, if fact it is usually still loose.Sara

Ok, great now I know there is at least one person like me. I have never considered not going for two after D to be C. Frankly it's a relief.I have a calcium question. I read about calcium being helpful for D. I was having bad d for several days and decided to try it. I took one (citracel with no Mag.) on Monday at lunch. Lunch passed straight through. I took another at supper. My stomach made a few waves and then settled down. I woke up the next morning and felt fine and had breakfast and no symptoms of D at all. I took one Gas X because my tummy felt a bit hard and slightly uncomfortable (no pain). There has been no sign of D since but also no activity (bm). I am afraid to take more calcium because to might bind me up. I am surprised the D left so quickly...maybe this is a coincidence?
