Some years back I went on Prozac. I recently read that it is sometimes used to treat IBS.During the time I was on Prozac I was aware of what a "pain killer" it was and how it straightened out my bowel so that I had "normal" movements with "normal" stool. My discomfort lately has me thinking I want to go back on Prozac just to straighten out my bowel. The problem being the other undesirable side effects - sleep disturbance, urinary urgency that seems to have an enduring impact on the prostate (?), complete lose of sex drive, the host of other possible side effects that did not arise during my use is frightening.Do you have any experience or reference to other drugs of this type that do not have the same bounty of side effects and still improve or eliminate IBS?Frank.2

Frank you might try Hypnotherapy which has an excellent track record for ALL IBS. Something to look into or CBT perhaps or anti-d's plus one of the above.FYI thoughTHE USE OF ANTIDEPRESSANTS IN THE TREATMENT OF IRRITABLE BOWELhttp://ibsgroup.org/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/712...02661#771102661Use of Antidepressants in the Treatment of IBS?http://216.109.125.130/search/cache?p=anti...&icp=1&.intl=usAntidepressants for irritable bowel syndrome http://gut.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/52/4/598Hypnotherapy for IBSWhy Consider Hypnosis Treatment for IBS?http://www.ibshypnosis.com/whyhypnosis.html

Frank --Antidepressants will have different side effects on different people. I tried Zoloft, which was terrible for me. I stopped and didn't take anything for a long, long time. Recently, I started taking Effexor XR and it has been great. Almost no side effects for me and it has helped my IBS tremendously. I now have very little to no IBS symptoms now. Hope this info helps.
