It seems that most people with IBS have too much diarrhea. Well, I have constipation AND diarrhea and it makes for a very ugly situation. Usually, I don't go for about 5 days, then I suddenly have an "attack" (as I call them). Then, I am in EXTREME pain for sometimes up to 45 minutes before I can go because the hard stuff is in the way. When that finally comes out, it's followed by water-like diarrhea. It's just awful when it happens. I don't think Caltrate Plus would help me because of the constipation part. My Dr. wants me to take Metamucil EVERY day to stay regular. We'll see how it goes.Anyone else like this or am I a weirdo?Jane

Janecat I am exactly like that. Tried the Metamucil for a long time and it does help alot. Keeps things moving on a daily or every other day basis and binds the extra water in the bowel, most of the time. I stopped because of the very smelly gas it produced and am trying diet modification. That is tricky for me but seems to be working. Have eliminated white flour, sugar (almost) and any real greasy stuff. Eating a high fibre diet and taking Caltrate Plus one a day for me and so far so good. Try the Metamucil and give it several weeks using it every day. I would like to know how it works for you. Good luck.
Janecat - no, some people do have similar problems as you. I am strictly "D" myself but have talked to lots of others with both, like yourself. You are not weird. And by the way, Metamusil is supposed to be good for both "C" and "D" so my doctors says - it is a bulking agent that is supposed to regulate you. Hope it helps you.

You described exactly what happens to me!!!It is so nice to hear that I'm not the only one. I will plug up for about 5 days and then have an explosion (or I too call it an "attack") The pain involved just trying to get the "D" out is excruciating. I bought some metamucil, just haven't tried it yet. Was actually scheduled for a flex sig today but I chickened out. Had a barium enema last month and that was really enough for me!!!!As long as I am at home when an attack hits I'm OK but yesterday it happened at work and that is the worst!! Had to leave early and even had to stop at a public place on the way home. I'm glad I have pretty understanding co workers, but it sure is embarassing. :-(
