A friend of mine has had all the sypmtons of IBS for about 2 years now. She also had a SEVERE staph infection in which she had to have two spots removed because they came out from the skin. After a year off and on antibiotics, in and out of hospitals they said their is nothing else they can do for her. Now about 6 months ago she started hurting all over. We figured she was now getting fibromyalga.(spelling?) She is now taking pain meds and after a few months is 100% addicted. She is in so much pain she cannot help but to take them.Last week she went in for a bunch of blood tests and scans. Now they are saying she has a severe back problem with a disk and needs back surgery. She is scared to death. I told her if someone told me I could get this operation for IBS and it would help I would go for it. Anything is worth a shot when you are in pain 24-7. The Dr also said that this back problem could be the cause of her IBS. Says nerve endings all go towards the back and so do all the nerves in the stomach etc. I told her I Would have the surgery to get rid of back and body pain, but it probably would not get rid of her IBS. But she insists Dr said it really could.Has anyone ever heard of this? I cannot beleive a back surgery would have anything to do with your IBS, stomach, intestines, colon. What are your ideas and info on this?Any ideas or sugestions would be appreciated. Thanks Kat

I have back problems and my doctors said that it could be worsening my IBS. There is a certain spot in my spine and really hurts(even to touch) and my doctors said taht that is the spot where the nerves for teh stomach and intestines go. I started seeing a chiropractor and he has been working on my back and my IBS has improved a lot. He is also a naturopath so i'm also taking supplements so that might also be contributing to me feeling better. But yes, i have heard this from my doctors(my internist and my neurosurgeon) too. SO for your friend it might help things but i dont' know if it would cure her IBS.
Kitkat 17This is very intresting to me as I have been having back pain for past 8 mths, I have been to hospital for a MRI scan,I get my results in 2 weeks. They think its a trapped nerve or bulging disc.I have had IBS for about 15yrs but the past yr or so worse.I dont get much pain in the stomach region but a lot of very uncomfortable feelings (bloatedness and some times tenderness there )The doctor said to me about the nerves in the back ,that they can cause trouble with the bladder ect, which surprised me too.I have small urine leaks at times,so it might be down to that,I never told him about the IBS as I find they are not really intrested in itHe said I might have to have an operation to correct it ,if it can't be treated any other wayIt would be good if an op also helped my IBS.will keep you posted on any results if i have the op .Janny
