Caltrate Plus Question?

1088 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  lapr
So many of you have had such great results with Caltrate Plus. I really want to give it a good try for D. Was only able to buy Caltrate Plus in the Pink & White bottle. Took 2 a day, had some luck for 2 weeks, then boom, a relapse, probably what I ate. My husband just got back from a trip and was able to buy the Purple & White Caltrate Plus with the added minerals etc. Does anyone know if these added ingredients make a difference in how it helps D? Mostly, I wonder if their is a big difference between the Pink & White & the Purple & White. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I feel from all of the feed back I have received the one with the added minerals does a better job. It sounds as though you were doing okay with the pink and white box. I would not get discouraged with the slight relaps this is something that has happened to a few. If you go up to 3 tablets a day you might be more satisfied. You can also find store brands with the same ingredients and the purple and white box at a cheaper price just read the label. It takes some a little while to get adjusted so don't give up. Let me know if I can help. I am the person who brought this info about the calclium to the board last October 1998 and I have been doing great for over a year with the calcium with every meal. Sometimes I get by on two a day but if I eat out I always take the 3 a day.Linda
Thank's Linda, I thought it was you that brought the Caltrate Plus to the BB, good for you, it has helped so many. I won't give up, that is for sure. The Druggist said, taking 3 a day is pushing the limit, I should only take 2. I know you take 3, maybe I should too. I will try 3 from the purple & white box for awhile and see what happens. Thank you very much for the info, I really appreciate it.

Luckylou, et. al.I just started taking Caltrate Plus (purple box) tablets last night, since I've been on bentyl for a few weeks now and I'm not entirely happy with the results.I was planning on taking about 3 a day, one around each mealtime, whether I have a meal or not, just to space them out. From what I understand, you can't really overdose yourself with this stuff. The package sets a ceiling of effectiveness at 2000 mg per day, so I figure that since 3 a day is under that level, I'd be ok.I can only hope that I'll get the great results that others on the board have enjoyed.

I actually use the Caltrate Plus chewables which I get in a big bottle and have had great results. With Caltrate and many other calcium supplements you should take it with meals to help the calcium absorption. I take the equivilent of 1000 mg a day. It's not a cure all but it was the first thing that helped me with the D and some of the pain. I got some relief with Tums at the beginning before I got my hands on the Caltrate which has been better than Tums for me. Good luck, Jackie
La Vida -- It's not quite true that you can't really overdose yourself with this stuff, particularly if you don't take them with enough food or water. 2,000 may be a limit, but 1,500 is better and a lot of doctors say even that's too much for calcium carbonate, which is less easily absorbed than other forms of calcium and more apt to calcify. Of course we know about doctors on this site -- they often have opposing, over-conventional and overcautious, outdated opinions. And it's been cited often here that calcium carbonate not only can't cause kidney stones but helps prevent them. There's a small caveat there: it helps prevent them when you're taking it as a food, but there's a slight but definite risk of kidney stones when taking it in supplement form. It's not totally clear why this is -- it has something to do with oxylates, and don't ask me to define that term --Flux would do better at it. They are more present at lunch and dinner than the usual breakfast. If you were to go up to 2,000 for instance, and most certainly beyond, you would then be really upping your risk.

Personally I found no relief from theCaltrate in the purple and white bottle. I then switched to the pink and white one and have had great results. Apparently something, I beleive the magnesium, in the purple was affecting me. It's worth trying them all until you find one that helps you.Lori
