I would have posted this in the anti-depressant or diarrhea forum, but they seem to get fewer responses.Anyway...I'm wondering if someone out there can help me figure out a different anti-depressant to try. I'm a type D exclusively and have been taking Remeron for the past 3 weeks. It has really helped with the D, but not my anxiety. I was hoping it would help to calm my nerves, but instead I've become very irritable and have very little patience with people. I just feel like everyone else is a complete idiot and I want to tell them all to shut up! Not the reaction I was hoping for! I also find it difficult to wake up in the morning. I've done some research and I don't think I want to try any of the SSRIs like Paxil or Prozac because of the side effects of sexual dysfunction and diarrhea. Other options are Effexor which seems to have *really* bad withdrawl symptoms, and Serzone which seems to actually increase anxiety. The other option is to go with a Tricyclic, and I'm thinking that Elavil might be the best choice for me, especially because they are constipating. Does this seem to make sense? Anyone else have experience with Remeron and a Tricyclic?BTW, weight gain is not a problem for me. I'm actually underweight and have only gained a couple pounds on Remeron.Do I just need to give the Remeron more time? It seems like it would be doing *something* by now for my anxiety. I have to go to the Dr. in a couple weeks to discuss whether to stay on the Remeron.

Consider this approach.Try throwing all those toxic medications away and start over again with a natural method which mostly will mean a complete change of diet and lifestyle aimed at removing from your life the things that are driving you nuts.Believe me, from experience, I can say you are much better off without any "uppers" or "downers".Think about it. Best of luck!

pdb, the thing with these is its trial and error for most and no to experiences on them are really the same. I would work with your doctor on this one.For a natural approach and perhaps a more effective one with no side effects try Mike's tapes.www.ibsaudioprogram.com

Hi pdbHave you considered St-john's wort? It 's for mild to moderate depression and works really well for anxiety. You can quit cold turkey with it if you decide to stop taking it. I was taking it but had to stop because it was causing some intestinal pain. I called the Kira(kind I was taking) and they say rarely does it cause intestinal discomfort. Kira is supposed to be the best.

I have been taking Elavil for about 9 months now. I started low at 20ml than 50ml and now i am at 75ml. I take 50ml at bed time and 25ml in the morning. It has helped me a lot with the pain i was having. I still take lomotil when i get a d attack. Most of these meds are trial and error. I have tried many other meds and Elavil has worked the best for me. Good Luck.

I am told that Remeron can help with anxiety as well. I believe it takes from 4 to 6 weeks to reach a good blood level.I personally suggest you stay with it a little longer.I was on Elavil some time ago for pain and depression. It helped D. It did not seem to control all my anxiety, but I slept well and that helped with anxiety.People can react to the very same medication differently. So you are best experimenting with different kinds.Hope you find something that helps. Let us know what happens.

Hi PrettyDarnBi-chy! ____________________________________"I just feel like everyone else is a complete idiot and I want to tell them all to shut up! " ____________________________________I am puzzled....this is a problem?
If so, rather than giving the lecture on preventive medicine I wil try to stick specifically to your question. If you feel that you are satisfied with the results except for the stress and irritability...I am not clear if it accompanied by or driven by feelings of anxiety and/or "urgency" about things, but one additional medication (sicne we are doing the drug thing here) which can be helpful combind with antidepressant therapy might be low doses of Xanax.Rather than trying to fiddle with other antidepressants and losing the symptomatic relief you gained, maybe ask the doctor about adding a low dose of Xanax, maybe a couple of the little ones (I forget what are they..0.25 mg?) per day and see if that helps settle you down. The downside of course it that Xanax is habit-forming but if the doses are kep low and strictly managed this is usually not a problem. Also, I say ask the doc as I am doing this on the fly without double checking the PDR to make sure (I beleive I recall it is OK) Xanax and Remeron are compatible. Maybe you have a minute to double check..I gotta fly...Anyway, thats just the second idea that popped into my head. the first one you already had suggested.Good luck!

You need to give the Remeron at least 4 - 6 weeks before you evaluate its effect on anxiety. Remeron has helped me with anxiety, as well as depresion, sleep probs and IBS. It really stopped my panic attacks and brought down the constant anxiety too. Give it some time and maybe it will do the bizz for you.

I don't think it's accurate to say antidepressants are 'downers'! They stabilise chemicals, evening out mood. They don't put you on a high. Misinformation is not helpful!

Sorry I missed this post before. I was the same way wiht remeron at - first - give it time and you will even out - it really does need the 4-6 weeks. DOn't ever apologize for posting here - just because someone criticized your question. Xanax is compatible with Remeron - not that I tired it - but my psych was going to supply me iwht some. I opted to work on the anxiety and bouts of panic. I don't want to t ake meds to walk around and feel no emotions - part of this is learning how to resolve issues - the meds like Remeron help take away the symptoms and clear the brain so that you can focus on the issues at the core - not at the symptoms. In other words - if you are spending time worry about hoew to stop a panic or anxiety attack - you could be taking a med to handle that 'symptom' while you work at the root of what is causeing hte attacks. Good luck!
