CAN YOU COLLECT DISABILITY FOR IBS??

722 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Loraine
Hey all!Is IBS a valid disorder for collecting disability? I had always heard that it wasn't, but I read the survey results on www.iffgd.org, and one of the statistics is that so many people reported collecting disability because of IBS. Does anyone know if this is possible? I have been unable to hold a job for months now, but I thought I was dead in the water. Please share your wisdom- if it is possible, what must one do?Thanks to all!Amy

Hi Amy,This is exactly the question I wanted to ask! I've been having a difficult time finding a job also. Let's hope someone answers this message.LouLou
I don't know about IBS and disabiltity, but I am trying to help someone obtain disability that has bi polar disorder. It is a very difficult thing to do. Number one thing to remember is that if you are able to work even for one day, you are not eligible. They do their own evaluation with their own doctors and a person could starve to death or become homeless while waiting for them to decide if they are worthy. AND! don't forget if you get turned down the first time to appeal! Then appeal again after that with an attorney. It takes a long time, but these are the steps that have to be taken.. If you give up, you will never get it. Dianne
that's interesting information from iffgd. do they have other info? for those with questions about disability it might be worthwhile tosearch the site here as this seems to come up about once a month.tom

I have applied for my SSD, as since my 2 surgeries I have not improved. Still with the IBS and now a major adhesion problem. It probably will be some more surgery. I used to work part time, now I am less than part time, usually 2 mornings per week when I can tolerate it.char

Hi, I am recieving social security disability due to my problems with IBS, depression, and anxiety/panic disorder with agoraphobia. I have been out or work for a year and a half. To get information or apply you can call the Social Security Administrations toll free number, which is 800-772-1213 and listen to the prompts to get through to someone to talk to them about the process and application. I will tell you right off the bat that it takes A WHILE to get a decision. There is something like a 5 month waiting period or something like that for a decision to be made, but for me it took about a year to be approved and to start receiving benefits. Hope this helps, and it would be best to contact them as soon as possible because like I said it is a long process and the sooner you get the ball running, the sooner you will get your decision from SS! Good Luck!

I'm not quite sure if you can collect disability for IBS, but I know for a fact that you can collect disability for ANXIETY. I've been there. Only thing, it's rough getting off of it. Also, once the doctors see your disability/medicare/medicade card, they treat you like ####/dirt/and don't spend as much time as people who pay cash or have so called "normal" insurance. Not all Doctor's are like this, but I had to keep searching for one who really cared about me, rather then why I was disabled. They just ask too many questions, and boy, do I ever hate that. Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh against some doctors, but I did clarify myself and say "not all Doctor's."Hope this has been of some help for you.Another thing, I am still paying back overpayments made to me by Social Security. I told them for months and months that I was working, and they kept sending the checks. When I called them every month, they told me that I am to cash them, that I have a right to cash them, that they are mine...and thank you for calling...is there anything else we can do for you. Like I said, I am paying them back, a small amount every month, with no interest, because they admitted that it was their fault.Jadair---

Thanks for the warning about going back to work after getting disability benefits, Jadair!
I am going to have to try to go back to work at the beginning or middle of next month. Like I said in an earlier post I have IBS and Anxiety/Panic disorder with agoraphobia. I am worried about not being able to get a job due to the amount of time I have been out of work, and for the reasons I have been out of work. I have been out of work for about a year and a half. I was not able to get medicaid, if I did I would have have to met a spindown amount that was outrageous, so I just had to wait and save till I could afford to go to the doctor. For anyone else reading this, please pray for me and keep your fingers crossed for me. I haven't traveled for more than maybe 5 or 10 miles from where I am living in over a year and I will within the next few weeks be moving from Missouri to Alabama. The scary thing for me is that I have to take a bus, which means a 19 to 22 hour bus ride with multiple stops! The only thing that I keep telling myself is that I HAVE to do it! I figure that if I keep telling myself that that it will help me get through it! Thanks for listening.
