Here is the brief from their website. I will translate as best I can. http://www.techlabinc.com/whatsnew.html
ELISA is a test that can be used to very specifically detect something. In this case it is detecting lactoferrin. It can tell you how much, not just a yes/no response.Lactoferrin must be something the fecal leukocytes produce and so when it is elevated there are more of these cells. These are cells that increse when there is inflamation in the GI tract.quote:The IBD-CHEK is the newest test available from TechLab. It is an ELISA for the qualitative detection of elevated levels of lactoferrin, a marker for fecal leukocytes and an indicator of intestinal inflammation.
Since this is fecal, and if memory serves they do this from a stool sample, this is more of a something to do probably prior to doing a sigmo/colon test. So if the patient is negative you don't have to do the invasive and expensive proceedure to rule things out. If it is positive, or borderline then you would probably do one of the scopes to figure out which of the IBD's it is, and how extensive the problem is.quote:The test can be used as an in vitro diagnostic aid to help identify patients with active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and rule out those with active irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which is noninflammatory.
People with IBS are negative and people with IBD's are positive and since it is a fast and easy test to do, you should be able to put people in the right group faster. Instead of waiting several weeks for them to get a scoping scheduled. This is the sort of thing where they could get the sample from you and tell you in a day or so whether you have an IBD, and decide if you really need a scoping to check for other things. If you are over 50 they will likely do the scoping anyway as things like polyps and cancer are more common the older you get and they need to check for those things if you have GI symptoms (especially if you start having GI symptoms) when you are older.K.------------------When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. Both of these diseases result in elevated fecal lactoferrin. As a result, patients with these diseases test positive in the IBD-CHEK. In patients with active IBS, the intestine appears normal upon endoscopic examination and there is no indication of inflammation. As a result, IBS patients test negative in the IBD-CHEK. The IBD-CHEK is a simple-to-use microwell format that has a turnaround time of an hour and fifteen minutes.
