During my colonoscopy a couple of years ago my doctor found a benign polyp, (it was the type that can eventually turn to cancer.) He told me that we should do a colonoscopy every 3 years. During my last visit he changed it to every 4 years, (he said that is standard procedure.) Can anyone tell me their experience with this and how often one should have this procedure done? Thanks.

I don't think there is any hard and fast rule re how often to have the colonoscoy. For several years, I had them yearly and hated them, but they found polyps and I was taking no chances (colon cancer runs in the family). Then I went 2 years and had no polyps, so I am going on to my second year again (had my last colonoscopy just a year ago) and will have another at the end of 2 years. My doctor said I could go 5, but I don't feel comfortable with that amount of time. I suppose, depending on your insurance company as well and its benefits, it would be up to you. I personally would not go longer than 2 years, just for my own peace of mind. Phyllis

I have had irritable bowel syndrome for many years, at least 30 or so. However, I feel I should get a colonoscopy but I am really nervous about it especially about drinking that horrible liquid that you have to drink. Also, I am really afraid as to what the outcome may be.

Get the colonoscopy, but don't drink the horrible liquid...there are several other alternatives..the best, I think, is the Dulcolax prep....modified diet just prior, then six Dulcolax tablets spaced out at specified intervals, then liquid diet...thats it.
