Has anyone on the IBS-C forum seen a specialist who they feel is a proper expert in the specific symptom of constipation? Or even seen someone who they felt really knew what they were talking about when it comes to this symptom? Preferably in the UK, but anywhere would be good.It seems to me that very, very few gastros have this as their main research interest - are actually publishing research in this field. A knowledge of constipation disorders just seems to be an afterthought for the vast majority of GI specialists IMHO.Thanks!

Hi Naomi, my consultant is a world expert in IBS, though I'm not sure he knows more about C than D. His name is Professor Spiller and he's based in Nottingham at the Queen's Medical Centre. I definitely trust him 100% more than any other specialist I've seen (though that isn't hard, considering the others were all patronising idiots). He's also the one who got hold of Resolor for me, which can't have been easy as it took about 6 months. Hope that helps!

Thanks very much, yes I've heard of Robin Spiller. I'm trying to get hold of Resolor too.Anyone else? Surely there are some docs out there who actually know a bit about constipation?

I could give you a long list of gastroenterologists in the Atlanta Gaarea who aren't very helpful, but so far, no one that has been particularlyhelpful.In 1988 Dr. David Rausher told me to take fiber and senna and that's whatI've done since then. It's the only thing that works for me.I hate taking the senna, but I've tried Miralax, magnesium, and everythingelse. The papaya helped a while but not long term.I have an appointment in September with Dr. Robin Rutherford at Emory Clinicin Atlanta, and what I've read online she looks to be a good doctor, so I'll see.

My GP said she would look into it for me. I ought to be able to get hold of it as it has been released in the UK now. Don't know whether it has to be prescribed by a gastro. Are you in the UK too?It seems to me that you could find the webpages or publishing records of a hundred gastroenterologists before you found one who had a real academic interest in constipation as a disorder. Many, many more are upper GI or colitis etc - hugely, hugely disproportionate in terms of suffering caused/frequency of occurance. Truly, it is an absolute disgrace - mark my words, this is absolutely the reason why we with marked IBS-c/idiopathic C are all suffering so much. The bowel is secondary only to the brain in complexity, yes, which partially explains the lack of research understanding/effective help...but I honestly think it is more that few doctors want to say "I work on constipation" when asked what they do for a living. It really is as simple as that.

I am yes. I got my prescription from my consultant gastro (Prof Spiller) after asking him to look into it for me. I had to pick it up from the hospital as he obviously wrote it on a hospital prescription pad, but I'd imagine I'll be able to get the next one (if it works) from my gp? Otherwise it will be very complicated to get a repeat!
