Spasmonal is what the Dr gave you if I am remembering right.. and that is an antispasmodic usually given for relief of cramps & spasms. Now antidepressants are also used for pain relief. I think your Dr prescribed one of those for you too? And if it is an SSRI, that can also help with constipation as it has diarrhea as a side effect. Here is our page on Meds (scroll down for the chart):http://www.ibsgroup.org/medicationsHope this helps

HiYes he did. I was more asking for a pain killer like paracetamol, or something stronger. I'm on Nortriptyline 20mg as well, but I suffer from IBS-C, and Nortriptyline gives you constipation!I wonder how long it will take for the Nort to start to work. The cramping pain is bad sometimes, That I carnt beleive that this is IBS, even tho I have had loads of tests. The consultant has asked if I wanted a second opion. I do still think I have something serious like a blockage.Fiona

Fiona Can you ask your Dr to try a different antidepressant.. ya know one that doesn't have constipation as a side effect? SSRI's are better for constipation patients and Tricyclics are better for D patients I think...Refer to that link I gave you above to see the different ones. I don't use "pain medication" for IBS pain as it simply doesn't work for me. (even narcotics) What did work on my IBS pain was Hypnotherapy. I used this program on CD's at home:http://www.healthyaudio.com/content/ibs?r=VmPRrcNkYou can read more about hypnotherapy here on our CBT/Hypnotherapy Forum:http://www.ibsgroup.org/forums/index.php?showforum=9

Thanks for your reply.I have asked my consultant about changing and he said, because Nort has help with nerve pain he wants me to try this, and not swop, so I suppose I'll have to try and manage the C.Has Hypnotherapy helped you.?Fiona

Yes. Very much so.. worked better than narcotics.I kinda don't understand your Dr. If you didn't have the constipation.. you wouldn't have the pain or at least you wouldn't have it as severely would you ?? So to me he should be treating the constipation first so maybe you can avoid the pain. I would fight him a bit on the anti-depressant since there are so many others he could try that might help the constipation!
