Dark (black) and tarry looking stools are not indicative of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They usually imply gastrointestinal bleeding in your upper GI, ie: stomach or small intestine. The symptoms of IBS are pain followed by a bowel movement which usually relieves the pain. You should seek medical attention for dark tarry stools as it could be a serious situation. I would see your doctor as soon as possible. Good luck, Jeffrey Roberts, Founder IBS Self Help Group http://www.ibsgroup.org

What is going on when a bowel movement is very dark and tarry looking? I've had that and I don't know why, what is the deal?
