I was diagnosed with IBS-D about 16 years ago and have lived with it ever since, mainly managing it with diet, Imodium, occasionally anti-anxiety meds etc. From the beginning of this year my IBS-D seemed to get progressively worse until I finally went back to my GP a couple of weeks ago to get things checked and to see if there was anything else I could try. I had to do three stool samples over three different days, each time having to do one sample into an empty container and one into a container of fixative for specialised testing. I've just had the results back and one sample tested positive for a parasite called Dientamoeba Fragilis. I've never heard of it before but after searching the net for a bit it sounds like a lot of people supposedly suffering from IBS have discovered they are actually infected with this parasite and that the symptoms are almost a mirror of each other. I'm now on a course of Flagyl (which is making me feel the worst I've felt in a long time) in an attempt to kill the parasite. My doctor seems to hold a lot of hope that this is what has been wrong with me the whole time, and not IBS. My fingers are definitely crossed at the hope of a "cure" to my problems but I wondered if anyone else had any experiences with this?
