Hey Treehugger youre hugging the wrong trees. If you can afford to go over to Thailand, there is a superb resort on the Island of Phuket called the Mangosteen Resort(its on the net)There you can hug as many mangosteen trees as you like, but you`d be better off shaking them, because its the fruit that will help you with your gas.You probable have a fermentation problem in your gut which produces lots of gas,as anyone who brews beer or makes wine will tell you. This happens if you have developed an inability to process sugars properly. You may also have a fungus called Candida feeding from them,.Candida demands to be fed & it is difficult to give up eating your favorite sweets because of this.Kind of like giving up the smokes. It has been proven that Mangosteens rind contains 41 Xanthones that will deal with fungal, bacterial & inflamation in the bowel, the .S.E Asians have been using it for dysentry & diahrea for many centuries. I have been drinking the puree for 7 months & it certainly works, Have a look at Google ,type in "mangosteen Australia" & check out No1 & 2. If you decide to try Mangosteen you may feel a bit flat for a few days as the candida dies, it can have deep roots that 'tug at your hand for sweets' Good Luck. Dave & Jo

OK, so even though lately I have tried to concede that you know more than me, I find this to be a joke.So what you are telling me is that if I have a sensitivity to wheat, soy, malitol, etc, there will be no increase in gas?Let me put it one more way: you are essentially telling me that the malodorous and volumonous gas is all in my head. Forget the fact that protein makes it sulphuric, and carbs increases volume.........the point is that if I had NOT eaten those foods, I would have felt normal. That's all that counts.Lisa

I guess it depends on what you mean by "sensitivity". To me, sensitivity results from some interaction between the food and your own human body cells. If your immune system reacts to milk protein, then it is OK to say are hypersensitive to milk. Another type of reaction is pharmacological. In some people, their body's own cells react to monosodium glutatamate and they get flushed in the face. But gas produced in the gut is done entirely by "foreign" organisms, namely bacteria living in your gut. These bacteria are living there, feeding on what you feed yourself. To them, it is normal to be making these gases. Obviously, not everyone is producing these particular gases in the volume you are producing them, so there is something different about ecological environment in your gut, but I wouldn't use the term "sensitivity" (or intolerance for that matter) to describe it.

So you are defining intolerance as an allergy of some kind. And malabsorption does not necessarily create symptoms and hence malabsorption is not= intoleranceI like this definition that I saw"Pronunciation: intol`&r&ns Etymology: L, in, not, tolerare, to bear, a condition characterized by inability to absorb or metabolize a nutrient or medication. Exposure to the substance may cause an adverse reaction, as in lactose intolerance"

I found this site helpful in explaining that I am not crazy re: 'sensitivity' (to soy, in this case). http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/soyflatulence.html I understand your explanation Flux, but at the end of the day, it is all semantics. What would you have us say? Finally I am identifying some troubling foods (for me), and you come along and tell me I am not 'sensitive' to them. Geesh!I don't care if it is existing bacteria in the gut that is absorbing them in such a horrible fashion.....the point is that I am indeed 'sensitive', or my bacteria is anyway.Lisa

Regarding using soy milk instead of cow's milk in cereal... soy can cause gas in normal people, so if you're prone to it you might want to see how you tolerate it before you go nuts using it. Remember, soybeads are legumes (beans beans the magical fruit...) Some formulations are supposed to be easier to digest than others. I like to use rice milk or almond milk with my cereal. I like the vanilla flavored stuff.I also think the probiotics in yogurt help keep me in good shape. I've been low or out of yogurt for the past month or so and haven't taken any probiotic supplements either in that time and my gas has increased a lot! It used to be a secondary issue, but now it's usually worse than my other symptoms (IBS-D). I am going to try eating my daily yogurt again and see if that helps.

Every day my digestion gives me a hard time, but I can live with it and not let it interfere with my life. Add certain food to the equation and then I have to be near a toilet for the next few hours, because I will have several, frequent (mostly not completely urgent) evacuations. So instead of the usual 'you're wrong' (or do you mean 'stupid?) comments, maybe you could enlighten me with how to deal with it. It's related to food, there's no doubt about it. All I can imagine is that the bacteria in my stomach is such that all food is poorly digested, but some more poorly than others.

Arnie, they insist in trying to confuse everybody with big words, & when you are in pain or distress they dont mean f--- all. What I say to you is ,if your immune system isnt working properly then you will be allergic or sensative to certain foods. Raise your immunity & you will have fewer problems. Mangosteen Puree is the strongest known antioxidant in the world.17,000 to 24,000 ORACS per 1oz. Compare that to prunes,5,770, blueberries,2,440, cranberries,1,750, Kale 1,770 Garlic 1,662 , spinach,1,260 . The only thing that beats it per oz is clove oil,108,958., but drink that & youre dead!! If you drink 1 oz of mangosteen puree per day your liver, heart, kidneys & just about everything else in there will thankyou for it ,& you should have an energy burst to prove it.

Logic? 1) Food allergy/intolerance is not the problem. 2) Wouldn't "Raising the immunity" make things worse?

Thanks for offering assistance and support, gownowoften.LisaL has it right. It is semantics. I imagine that what is affecting those of us who correspond on this board is not allergy, but food intolerance, which is defined as an adverse reaction to food, not involving the immune system. The fact is that many of us can eat something which triggers off an unpleasant reaction. Each time we have that food, we get the reaction. I daren't have soy, and protein powder is a definite no-no because of my past experiences. Each one of us here should be able to spin out a list of food which causes discomfort. Unfortunately, many people get troubled by so many foods they are unaware of all their triggers.Lactose-intolerant people can get gas when lactose sugar ferments in the small intestine. There is no doubting that.Would you say that intolerances and triggers are different? And perhaps you mean that if we ger the gut flora sorted out, we'll be able to eat that banned food again, in which case they weren't intolerances.

Arnie , the diffences between intolerance & allergies, well it can be very discreet in that with intolerance, the mere fact that your father comes from Western Samoa ,Nigeria.or India could render you intolerant to cows milk, for instance, where as someone whose parents are Swedish, or Irish ,for instance could drink gallons of the stuff without ill effects. I believe it is to do with chromasomes .We have a situation here in Australia where the native aboriginals are not only intolerant to milk, but alcohol affects them so badly it is a major problem here. all due to chromosomes. Allergies on the other hand are brought on by the bodies defences over reacting to the triggers& irritations that set them into action . As the immune system gets weaker, it becomes over sensitive & allergic with more & more triggers. Say for instance a person is allergic to tomatoes, & somehow gets talked into having a meal which consists of them. The chances are that person will no longer be able enjoy potatoes, capsicums, egg plants or any of the solanum family because of the body`s recogition that they are relatives to the tomato. If by chance there is a product that can lower that allergic reaction, & lower the inflamation caused by that reaction then we have less triggers,& we as I.B.S sufferers start to get away with more & more foods we were 'allergic' toduring that extra sensitive period. Where there is inflamation anywhere in the body there is sensitivity of some kind which can cause pain, itchiness, spasms, C, D, arthritis,gout,.I.B.S of course, & in the head, Migraines, headaches , neuralgia, sore eyes etc. Get rid of that inflamation, & the healing process begins. The Mangosteen fruit has been proven to do this naturally without the damage to the stomach walls that anti-inflamatory drugs are notorious for. By reduction of the inflamation & rebuilding the immune system, even the those who have an intolerance to dairy , for instance, will have less reaction and/or repair faster after their 'splurge' than those with low immunity.

This is largely irrelevant since one needs to consume a fair dose of milk for the symptoms to appear.

Really?

But IBSers are not having these "reactions".

These fruits may have biological effects but what do they have to do with IBS? Anti-inflammatory drugs don't have anything to do with it.

This just makes no sense.

Hey Flux, For all your criticism of other peoples posts & what they are trying to achieve by helping each other, you suddenly seem lost for words , well your own words anyway!! You are taking up a lot of valuable posting space yet saying nothing, except what you aint! There are a lot of very distressed,& depressed I.B.S ers who need words of encouragement. As for me, well I`m not a medical professional either, but I have had 18 years of experience with I.B.S. After 6 or 7 years of believing what the doctors were guessing at (both symptoms ,& medication) ie, diverticulosis, polyps, colitis, chrones, narrowing of the colon etc, I got nowhere. I learned by trial & error studying nutritional almanacs, vitamin & mineral bookssupplement books, tissue salt books, homeopathics, meditation books ,tapes, lectures, pesticides, organics, herbicides, food additives.you name it. Now I have been told that the practising M.D.s that many of us trust so much with our lives , are taught practically nothing in the way of nutrition!!! So not being a Medical professional is sometimes a bonus!!

I've never heard of Mangosteen Fruit. Is it native to Australia? I would be willing to give it a shot. BTW, is it high in sugar?I am fifty eight years old. I do not remember a time when I didn't have IBS. I can assure you that I know what triggers me. I cannot tolerate alcohol in any form, including all the sugar alcohols.I also just discovered that Mung Beans trigger a violent reaction. (Artificial Sweetener called "Somersweet" = Deadly for me.I'm diabetic, and have to avoid sugar and starches)I can live happy and essentially happy on a low carbohydrate diet People Poo-Poo (no pun intended)the Atkins regime...well, I'm here to tell you I've lived on it for over twenty years. The only times I have problems is when I cheat.Luilu

Hello!I'm new to the group.I suffer from bloating and gas, and when I'm being good I avoid wheat and dairy. I've also noted, however, that I always know when I've eaten carrots, believe it or not! Anyone else react to carrots? It's a revelation to me that soya can be a culprit. I've been taking soya milk as an alternative to dairy milk for some time now, and think I'm going to have a go with another non-dairy milk to see if it makes me less gassy.
