I think this an important issue to be aware of, especially in people who are at risk for multiple CT scans (many ulcerative colitis and Crohn's patients wind up with repeat scans over the years). It may be worthwhile to ask your doctor for MRI over CT and if they decline, find out why. CTs are typically better in emergencies because they're quicker and therefore easier to access, but an MRI may be okay on a non-emergency basis depending on what your doctor's looking for.
