For so long I have been trying to find out the reason as to why I smell so bad. Then I came across a few websites that described hemorrhoids as causing people to smell like feces. This is because hemorrhoids can sometimes cause your rectum to not be able to close properly, causing the smells from the rectum walls to seep out. Also feces can become stuck around hemorrhoids thus intensifying the leaking smell greatly. What I'm thinking is the hemmroids I have, are right across from on another causing my rectum to be always semi-open. I can feel this effect when i pass gas, sometimes when i do there is no resistance at all, it almost feels as thoughmy rectum is wide open all the time. And other times when my hemorrhoids are not to inflamed my rectum feels a lot tighter. I know my problem is not TMAU because this FBO problem started in late high school, then it went away for about 4 years and re appeared when i was about 22, I am 26 years old now. What are your thoughts? If I get my hemorrhoids removed will the FBO go away?

I suffer from Hemorrhoids a lot,but i do not have any oder/smell.My Doctor prescribes me ointment which soothes them a bit and i actually use ice and rub that on them and it helps the swelling to go down.Have you been to your Doctor to have them looked?I think you should if they are that badly swollen.

Large internal hemorrhoids can prevent the internal anal sphincter muscle completely closing, and both internal hemorrhoids and polyps can cause the anal sphincter to go more lax.The docs here in Japan told me hemorrhoids don't cause bad smells, but I got an operation anyways. The fecal odor hasn't gone, but it has gotten a lot less intense and less frequent.External hemorrhoids are painful, but they wouldn't be a cause of fecal odor.

That makes sense. If your sphincter can't close then it seems obvious smells would leak out. I found the more my hemorrhoids bleed the more i smell. Also when my hemorrhoids feel less swollen the smell seems to be less evident

Have you seen a proctologist to have your hemmies assessed recently? That might be something to do to at least get their professional opinion on this anyway.

I've wondered about the connection as well. Except I don't think that my anus is being held open, instead I think that the hemorrhoids may be leaking pus or something which is being attacked by bacteria this giving off the odor. plus I get moist around my anus sometimes when I notice the smell is at it's worst. I blame alcohol in my case and have stopped drinking for a while to see if there is any improvement. When I was younger and first started partying, I noticed that the day after I drank a lot, I would have the wet anus and sometimes it would burn. It didn't happen everyday which led me to believe that alcohol was the problem. After all of these years of consuming alcohol it may have gotten a lot worse. I'll let you know how it goes.

I stumbled across this on google, and I had to register because I have the exact symptoms as described by Mr. Clean. Same onset of symptoms and time between occurrences, etc. Basically the first post x2 for me.Only difference with me is I went to a doc and got a colonoscopy. I got internal hem's removed, as the doc thought that was the cause of the FBO. He doesn't want to operate on the external hem I had, as he feared it would make things worse. He also told me to tough it out since odor is not enough reason to go with surgery. You nailed it man in your description; in simple terms, with the external hem there the 'door' never really closes.I've tried exercises to strengthen the sphincter but the hem is still the stronger.I know this thread is a couple years old but if anyone reads this I would like to know how you guys are doing and what you know, especially Mr.Clean. I will pm you I hope that's ok,thanks

I had hemorrhoid too but now it's gone and i still believe that I'm smelling bad,i'm now believing that it's Olfactory reference syndrome because symptoms of FBO are beyond the reason.if all tests were negative and all docs told you "it's in your head" this may be true .i want to increase my knowledge coz it help to get a better insight now we know many fbo people have hemorrhoid, why don't we get benefit of poll function in this forum!!?let's make statistics.I would like to do that but i don't know how beside my english is not good.

There was a person on here before complaining of this. She said she went to doctors and they could not smell an odorand her family members could not smell it either. After researching this on the internet, I was puzzled as I couldnot find such a disorder listed on anything but discussion forums. So I called some of the top specialists in the U.S. Two were colorectalsurgeons/professors, and another was a professor of medicine inemergency medicine. They thought I was joking. They never heardof this.I am open minded and I realize that medicine has a lot of pitfalls, but I am not convinced this even exists.I do believe that the people suffering from it smell feces on their bodybut I think it may be not real. Can anyone here prove this is a real disorder. Link me to a scientificstudy, not to some discussion forum or some doctor's website wherehe sells a book or a cure.

FBO is what it got named on message boards and is not a medical diagnosis. However, there are some very real odor causing disorders http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12938085While TMAU is called "fish odor syndrome" it really is a misnomer and there is a broad range of odors and people can have more or less odor depending on diet and other factors.I'm sure it isn't the only thing that causes foul body odor, but it really isn't a glamorous field.I do think there can be people with no odor that may have an anxiety disorder, however a lot of people do get actual commentary from others or can sometimes smell themselves and it isn't just people sniff or sneeze around me.

Well it is kind of confusing, because sometimes I can smell horrible smells and no one will say anything about it, which makes me think the smell is made up, or coming from within i.e. perhaps my a sinus problem or the smell of feces from my intestines wafting up to my nose internally. And then there are times were I do not smell anything and people I'm hangin out with will ask me if i farted. It makes no sense. I get asked if i farted about 1 to 2 times a month. This seems a bit abnormal to me as I do not believe normal people get ask this question on a regular basis. I know our minds can play a big role in this making things worse off then they really are, like perhaps we may smell a bad smell and instantly think it was coming from ourselves, then as your driving you notice a city dump and realize that the bad smell was not actually you. Other times I have smelt a fart and was instantly depressed that it was me , then my friend starts laughing and says it was him. I do believe that most of the time we smell bad things we label them to quickly without taking into consideration the possibility that it has nothing to do with us. If i did have ORS or some type of mental problem that still doesn't explain why i get so many comments. I've had people ask me if I change my underwear daily because i smelt bad, I've had people walk into a room i was in and say "it smells funky in here" I've had close friends of mine ask me if I have farted on several occasions when I did not. Where do all these comments come from? If I never smell>? I do have one theory, this theory can relate to buying a car. Have you ever bought a car and then noticed the same car everywhere you go? Although before you bought it, you never really saw it? This doesn't mean the car you bought did not exist before you purchased it, It merely means that you did not notice it. The same could be said about smells. Once you start to fear that you smell bad, you start to notice bad smells all the time, you notice people saying things about bad smells.... Then after starting to worry about the smells you begin to take ownership of all things smell related thus leading to a constant fear of FBO... I am not saying that we don't smell, just saying that fear can make things be blown way out of proportion just my two cents.....

Mrclean,I do understand the analogy and I think it is a good one.If I'm around a bunch of guys, that question (did you fart?)is asked, at least once a month. It could while drivingin the car and the odor may have been from outside, farmor sewer. It could be when walking around town. It couldbe when we're watching tv and drinking beers. Even withwomen I have dated or hung out with, the word fartcomes up quite frequently. And farting is common. I think everyone in the world doesit 20 times a day. It usually has an odor. Sometimes itsstronger than others. For me, when I eat a food I am allergicto, the smell can horrible. If this is not a real disorder and if physicians can not smellthis on you after repeated visits, it seems it is some sortof anxiety issue. Have you ever experienced anxiety, depression, OCD, oranything similar?

I actually was diagnosed with OCD about 5 years ago. It was a very severe form of the disease. I had to go to the hospital for 2 months and then was sent to a behavioral therapy clinic for another 2 months in a different country. My life was in ruins. I would shower for 15 hours a day, and washing my hands could sometimes take 4 hours at a time. It eventually got so bad that i could no longer get out of bed because i thought everything around me was contaminated. I became bedridden for 2 months and eventually stopped eating because i thought the food given to me was also contaminated. That's when my parents decided to bring me to the hospital. although its been quite some time since my OCD was that severe, every day for me is a struggle in one way or another. OCD can affect almost every aspect of ones life, but it can all be summed up by fear. Fear fuels the anxiety and the anxiety leads to the compulsions. So yes I do believe that OCD plays a huge role in my ordeal with FBO. OCD makes things much more amplified then they really are. But even through all this I still believe that sometimes I do smell bad, emphasizing on the "sometimes", because OCD will try to make me believe I smell bad all the time.

I had a feeling you would mention OCD.MrClean, fecal body odor is a term invented by individualson a discussion forum. This term has no meaning in themedical community. No documented case has ever existed.Ever. Everyone who thinks they have the disorder has statedno family member or doctor can smell it. The previous person I spoke with who thought she had thedisorder also was diagnosed with OCD years ago. You are imagining the smell. Are you currently on medicine and under the careof a psychiatrist? If not, I recommend you set upan appointment. You imagining this smell must be causing you anxietyand prohibiting you from doing the things you enjoyin life. Anyone reading this who has the same disorder shouldseek counseling.

I am seeing a psychologist, but I am not on meds, becasue all they do is make me feel like a zombie and thats no way to live.If you think that FBO is completely in my head, then how to you explain the bad smells i constantly smell when I'm alone. These smells cannot be coming from anywhere else but me

SunNSnow it is really impossible for you to say that Mr C has no odor with any certainty. Mr C ask your Dr and/or your Psychologist about this ok?

Yes.And you implying it is real, decreasesthe chances of people seeking treatmentfor this disorder. Your desire to one up me overrides your desireto help people on this board. That is unfortunate.Currently helping around 6 people on three boardsget psychological treatment for this mental problem. If you care about these people, delete your post anddelete this one afterwards.
