I am ware of a 5 year old boy who died as a result of choking while attempting to swallow one half of a Fibercon tablet. Apparently the tablets swell when in contact with liquid and when it became lodged in his throat, it swelled to the point that it could not be dislodged. If anyone has heard of this or has any information regarding this type of problem please contact me. I am thinking that the size and shape of the pill may be an issue but am not aware of any type of study on this issue. Perhaps there should be one if this is a problem.

I used to take four fibercon tablets per day and had to drink tons of water so I would not choke. The fiber tablets without enough water to wash them down can expand therefore choking you. I really got sick of taking all those pills and drinking all that water. The last thing I needed was to spend more time in the bathroom - but because of all the fluids.I now just eat two slices of the Spouted Grain Bread every morning toasted and I have completely eliminated the fiber pills (they were not working anyway). The bread makes me have a regular BM every morning with no problems at all throughout the day. In other words I can now say I do not have IBS.

First of all I am wondering why a 5 year old would be taking a Fiber Con to begin with. I think the directions indicate 12 years and older (tho I'm not sure), maybe it was an accident. Anyway, I take 2 fiber con tablets every night with a big glass of water and have had no problems. The package warns you in about 6 places that you MUST drink at LEAST a full 8 oz. glass of water with the pills or they can choke you. I guess everyone is different. I have no problem taking pills and don't even mind drinking all the water ( I even usually drink more than they recommend), AND I am a fanatic about reading lables on any medications or supplements. It's a sad story about the little boy. Read your labels and keep medications/supplements out of the reach of children. Cindy (in Arvada)

I have been taking 2 fibercon tablets daily for many years with no choking problems at all. The package warns to take with lots of fluid (or else it could cause choking as it swells in your throat)and also that people who have trouble swallowing shouldnt use it.------------------Nancy
