Went to the Emergeny Room last week and was admitted. Finally, after 3 years was given an X-Ray and CT (with IV contrast) and they found I have a Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO) and Intestinal twisting. The radiologist and surgeon said that the "pattern" is typical of scar tissue. They said surgery is too risky with very minimal chance of success. I was given no discharge instructions. (I'm so scared) and dont know what to do - dont thing the doctors knew either(!?)Please, if anyone could help I would really appreciate it. Any recommendations, suggestions or even web sites/support groups regarding this I would really appreciate it.

2B.. I'm sorry to hear you are having problems. I would definitely call your Doc's office and ask for instructions and guidance with diet etc and ask what treatments they can offer to ease your symptoms. Or maybe even ask for a follow-up appointment. But call in any event to get started on some means to help the symptoms.Sometimes.. well.. all the time.. we must be our own advocate. So do not be shy and give the Doc a call. If that Doc has no ideas.. keep looking for a Doc that can offer you some help. You might want to ask for copies of the diagnostics reports so you can bring them to any new Doc you might want to consult.Hope you feel better.BQ

My husband is an operating room nurse and says that some obstructions can resolve on their own. Hopefully yours will too. Try not to panic, they didnt say they saw a tumor or something like that. Maybe tomorrow (Monday) you can call a medical doctor (not a surgeon), either your pcp or gastro and they can help allay your fears and give you some guidance as to what to do, what to expect, etc. Also did you have abdominal surgery? When? Do you have endometriosis? Both things can cause obstructions. And it doesnt have to be right after surgery that an obstruction happens, though I believe its more common at that time but it can occur years later.Take a nice long hot bath and try to relax. Wishing you good luck

Thanks for all your help and support.I had a total colectomy with ileorectal anastamosis (my entire colon has been removed which is major surgery). The surgery was in May 03 and the pain and functional problems have been progressively worsening.I have narrowing of the intestines and the obstruction.I went to a GI on Thursday - not much help, no advise or support. Did bloodwork and said she would be going to the hospital and look at the CT slides and discuss with radiologist. Hasnt returned my calls. I am scared, it seems that help is not available and nobody wants to deal with it.It really would be helpful if I could get some medical reassurance - I'm not expecting unrealistic prognosis, just some support, advise and how to cope and what to do or not to do.The pain is sharp, stinging, like something sticks, eating and drinking is unbearable and so is having bm's which is a strain. I am also dependent on Zelnorm but it does cause a lot of sharp, hot, burning pain. Thanks again for all your help and support

Spasman,I may be wrong, but the info re the web site you gave me is for more acute and may be more appropriate for post operative obstruction and not for chronic long term complication. I am not sure what that procedure is all about though and would have to do some research. My use on the computer is so limited though because I can hardly get out of bed.
