Hi everyone,,,,, I've been reading some of the posts and am so happy that I have found a place to talk about what I go through with IBS. You know my husband , brother, dad,,,,, think it's crazy. It's hereditary evidentally , my mom has it , grandmother, and the list goes on and on.... I don't ever remember having it until after I had my first natural childbirth. I am having the mother of all attacks this week though. Usually a 5mg. valium will relieve my symptoms. But not this time. I've tried everything. My mother said that it was the fresh corn I just put up . She said she can't eat it. Anyway I'm lucky I can even sit in this chair , it hurts to sit down ,,,,, grrrrrrrrr I hate this. And my husband will say are you okay , and I say oh I'm just having a colon attack ,,,,,, lol that's what mom and I call them. And he thinks it's awful. If he only knew the pain I experience. I tried some Gas-X tonight to try and help with the gas like pains. I go from D to C , it's driving me nuts. Don't think I've ever had one to last this long. I think the stress of remodeliing a house through me into this one. Anyone got any suggestions on how to cope with this mother attack ? I may go to the doctor Monday and ask for something stronger. And do you guys get more relief from something like Valium or Bentyl that is a colon relaxer ? I need relief
.......... Any suggestions would be great. !!!!!! Thanks so much ,,,,, Lisa

Lisa Welcome!
I'm glad that you found us. Yes stress can bring on a flare for me too. & Yes in my book, re-modelling=stress! Positive or negative stress can do this to me. I'm not sure our bodies can tell the difference between the two! I used to be just D then I changed to C/D or D/C depending on the way the winds blew it seemed! I have made some dietary-lifestyle changes: Stopped undereating (this took some time) Upping my fiber & water, s-l-o-w-l-y. Exercising (just walking nothin fancy) Sleeping better. Using anti-spasmodic meds like Levsin & librax (In the same class of meds as Bentyl). And I did Mike's hypnotherapy program. I have seen dramatic reduction in symptoms & feel world's better.I hope you do too. Please continue to read posts & ask questions on here & our other Forums (Down by "Hop To:") Educating myself was my way onto better management of my symptoms. So welcome again & I hope you are feeling better soon.
BTW Lisa, Try some hydrocortisone ointment on your poor sore bum. That puts the fire out for me.

Hi - I've just come here for the first time too. It's a relief to find out I'm not strange after all. I take the subway to work and sometimes it can be quite a panic! Anyway, I was WONDERING whether this was hereditary because my dad and brother experience EXACTLY the same problems that I have. Lisa mentions her mom and grandmother. Do others also find this to be hereditary?

The question of genetics and IBS has been answered with a twin study (the gold standard for answering such things).IBS has both genetic and environmental components. It's kinda like heart disease. Some people are more likely genetically to get it than others but genetics isn't the whole story and environmental factors play a role as well.K.------------------I have no financial, academic, or any other stake in any commercial product mentioned by me.My story and what worked for me in greatly easing my IBS: http://www.ibsgroup.org/ubb/Forum17/HTML/000015.html
