What is Fructose Malabsorption or Fructose Intolerance? It is the inability to absorb fructose due to a lack of Glut-5 transporter to carry the fructose from the intestinal lumen into the walls of the intestine. Note fructose is a simple sugar and hence can't be digested further , so it is not a digestion problem. It is also not to be confused with Hereditary Fructose intolerance which is a metabolic disorder. What are the symptoms of fructose malabsorption?Diarrhea, gas , pain or/and bloating although not everyone with fructose malabsorption develops these symptoms. Note if vomiting is peresent it could be hereditary fructose intolerance although this is a disorder which is discovered in childhood and has to do with an intense dislike of sweets and fruits. How is fructose malabsorption diagnosed?By a fructose breath hydrogen test. You ingest fructose and then periodically blow into a bag which is sent throough an analyzer to measure the anmount of hydrogen in the expired air. If fructose is not absorbed by the body it makes its way into the colon where the bacteria feed off of it and produce hydrogen which is absorbed and carried to the lungs to show up in expired air. Any production of hydrogen implies that fructose was malabsorbed.Which foods contain fructose?Fruits(specially juices), vegetabes, High Fructose Corn Syrup(usually in pop, breads and sweets),wheat, legume and beans. For a more detailed idea of the amount of fructose in foods see http://www.uihc.uiowa.edu/FRUCTOSE/DietBasics.htm Who does the Breath Hydrogen test? Many major hospitals, specially in the Department of Pediatrics, do this test. Alternatively it can be done at home. Your doctor in this case has to request the kit from www.quintron-usa.com . They will have details about where it can be analyzed. Probably it can be ordered from Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory too. What is the treatment for Fructose Malabsorption?Elimination of fructose or sometimes partial restriction of fructose since the symptoms like gas are dose dependent. Alternatively having fructose with an equal amount of glucose or dextrose helps to absorb fructose as it rides piggy back on the glucose molecules during absorption
