Has anyone encountered any allergic reaction to garlic? I used to eat lots of garlic in my food and suddenly it has become allergic to me - causing gas formation and stool color changes (to green) etc. Many times, it is tough to avoid food that is garlic-free - especially when you eat outside. Any clues??M

Garlic is a huge trigger for me. I'm IBS-C. I become hugely, painfully distended. Nothing I do will make it go away except rest and time. Though in my case it doesn't appear to be gas, but actual muscular distention and spasms.Regardless, you are correct, the restaraunts have gone garlic crazy, they seem to have this need to put it in everything, including foods that you wouldn't even think would have garlic in them. So, I would say you have an intolerance to garlic, over time our IBS triggers can certainly change.I really feel for you, it is tough, all you can do in ask the waitstaff about ingredients. Sometimes, if the garlic is added during the prep process, you can ask them to have the chef hold the garlic. I know they look at you like you have 3 heads and you have insulted them, but hey, it's your gut.Hang in there.

Garlic has some antibacterial properties, so it's conceivable that it has a particular effect on some gut bacteria that you happen to have and killing them has altered your colonic function. If it killed off gas-consuming bacteria, it would leave you with more gas.

How would you know you have this?

Yes, I have to be very careful with garlic. I think it's because I have a sulphur intolerance (can't take sulphur based antibiotic medications either) and garlic has sulphur in it.I can eat a little bit, but I haven't yet figured out (accurately) what my limit is.I've just posted a note on the awful symptoms it gives me, actually.Shame, because I love it.Janne

I recently ran across a web article that mentioned allergy to garlic. It's usually found in people who are in contact with the stuff all day long in the food processing industry. Hard to imagine most of us getting that much contact just through food. You could have a particular sensitivity to it, though.
