IBS is a group of symptoms that can be caused by a wide range of conditions. The news of a woman who was diagnosed with IBS on the basis of her symptoms (as is recommended by the ROME criteria) and was later determined to be pregnant - 4 hours before she gave birth - is an example of why it is important to test IBS patients. http://www.todayonline.com/World/EDC100310...ering-pregnancyWhile unusual it just goes to show that diagnosing on the basis of symptoms alone is silly. Doctors should be testing for celiac disease, food allergies, bacterial imbalances and infections, parasites, and scarier stuff (like ovarian cancer, colon cancer, etc.). Women of childbearing age should be tested for pregnancy in a wide range of situations to ensure any drug therapies are not going to harm a fetus. Just diagnosing on the basis of symptoms may save a lot of money, but it doesn't solve the problem.I know there are those who will say that IBS has no known cause and no known cure, or is a brain-gut problem, etc. But IBS symptoms often have real, detectable, treatable causes. Doctors simply don't often test for them. More information is available about the research on IBS at http://www.InnateHealthFoundation.org.5_c.htm if you care to read published, peer reviewed research about the causes of IBS.
